Smart Eyewear Lab

The EssilorLuxottica Smart Eyewear Lab, a joint research center created in partnership with Politecnico di Milano, is pioneering the next generation of smart glasses that not only correct vision and provide style protection but also deliver augmented‑reality experiences. The Lab will integrate new hardware—electronics, sensors, processors, and interconnectivity—with advanced algorithms, including signal processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and low‑power embedded systems, to support AR functionalities.

The Lab will operate as part of the Group’s R&D platform, with more than 30 global R&D centers, 1,000 researchers, and over 11,000 patents. It will run for an initial five‑year period and will employ more than 100 researchers and scientists. The lab’s location is the Innovation District in the Parco dei Gasometri in Bovisa, Milan.

Position Summary

We are looking for a highly motivated Principal Investigator to develop innovative embedded algorithms for future smart glasses. The role involves close collaboration with Politecnico di Milano, international partners, and EssilorLuxottica R&D teams. You will focus on advanced eye‑tracking solutions, embedded machine learning, signal processing, smart sensor integration, low‑power hardware design, and proof‑of‑concept (POC) development.

Responsibilities

* Contribute to the development of the research center as an embedded system and embedded machine learning specialist, working alongside students, researchers, and employees.
* Design and develop novel low‑power machine‑learning and signal‑processing algorithms for new sensors and cameras, and implement them in microcontrollers and low‑power processors such as ARM Cortex‑M, RISC‑V, and FPGAs.
* Develop low‑power, embedded eye‑tracking algorithms using novel low‑power sensors and cameras.
* Develop embedded system firmware, integrating advanced algorithms with various sensors and functionalities to realize battery‑powered smart glasses.
* Integrate and test functionalities in proof‑of‑concept embedded systems.
* Participate in team meetings and interact with key stakeholders.
* Collaborate with companies and professors on projects and lab activities.

Requirements

* Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, embedded systems or equivalent; a PhD in a relevant field is preferred.
* Excellent knowledge of embedded systems, sensors, and algorithms (machine learning and signal processing).
* Strong experimental background and technical skills in firmware development for embedded systems, with or without real‑time operating systems.
* Excellent skills with electronic engineering lab equipment and performance evaluation.
* Experience in PCB design and electronics is beneficial.
* Experience in eye‑tracking algorithms is beneficial.
* Capable of developing systems at a hardware level—from component selection to PCB design and hardware debugging.
* Strong experience with C and Python.
* Experience with machine‑learning applications for resource‑constrained devices, and training tools.
* Preference for skills in implementing multi‑processor architectures based on microcontrollers and FPGAs.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Adaptable and flexible to continuous changes in research demands.
* Self‑motivation and independent learning, with a willingness to develop and test novel ideas.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We celebrate diversity and provide equal opportunities to all, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic that makes us unique.
