The Director of Community Engagement is responsible for cultivating meaningful connections as the key liaison between the organization, its volunteers, and the broader community. This role leads strategies to recruit, engage, and retain volunteers while also fostering partnerships with local organizations, schools, businesses, and community leaders. Through events, outreach initiatives, and collaborative programming, the Director ensures that volunteer engagement is deeply integrated with the organization’s mission and that the community sees clear pathways to support and participate. This role ensures the organization maintains a visible and responsive external presence in the community while fostering strong internal collaboration.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
* Define and oversee a clear, streamlined, and purpose-driven role for the Volunteer Manager, ensuring their focus remains on the effective recruitment, onboarding, placement of all volunteers, and related administrative duties.
Priorities:
* Act as a visible representative of Champions For Learning by serving as a liaison between the organization and the broader Collier County community including schools, businesses, and partner groups while maintaining strong internal collaboration and communication across teams.
* Establish and implement best practices for tracking volunteer hours within the Get Connected database, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance, and provide training and ongoing support to Volunteer Coordinator.
Duties/Responsibilities:
There are three main pillars of focus in this role: Strategic Leadership and Oversight, Volunteers, and Community.
Strategic Leadership and Oversight
* Develop and maintain a strong knowledge of Champions For Learning’s strategic plans, program offerings, and organizational goals to implement the annual Community Engagement work plan, calendar, and budget in conjunction with appropriate staff.
* Continuously update and refine presentation, training, and outreach materials.
* Contribute to grant writing and outcome reporting as appropriate
* Oversee the integration of volunteer engagement across student and educator program plans.
* Identify annual volunteer needs and implement communication strategies to support engagement, recruitment, and onboarding
* Partner with Development and other departments to integrate volunteer and donor cultivation strategies.
* Serve as the first point of contact for incoming volunteer inquiries and interest and internally connect as appropriate.
* Manage the execution of all volunteer information sessions and interviews
* In collaboration with the Volunteer Coordinator, develop volunteer cultivation and stewardship strategies to recruit and retain volunteers for the organization’s needs.
o Ensure volunteer application and onboarding processes are streamlined and user-friendly.
o Collect and incorporate volunteer feedback into a continuous improvement model.
o Oversee volunteer recognition efforts, including thank-you strategies, handwritten notes, and special communications.
o Lead planning for stewardship events (Ambassador Reception, Volunteer Luncheon, etc.).
o Ensure volunteer stories/testimonies are collected and featured in newsletters and social media.
Community
* Develop goals for annual community engagement activities and events.
* Support the development and management of MOUs to engage community partners.
* Identify and lead community outreach initiatives, including informational sessions and interactive experiences (e.g., roundtables, panels, and site tours), to engage community members, businesses, organizations, and K–12 school employees in learning about Champions For Learning, the state of education in Collier County, and how Champions For Learning supports local students and educators.
Required Skills and Abilities:
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and facilitation abilities for both small and large group settings.
* Strong interpersonal skills with a commitment to excellent customer service and relationship-building across diverse sectors.
* Highly organized with keen attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
* Proven time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines and delegate tasks effectively when appropriate.
* Analytical and strategic thinker with strong problem-solving and sound decision-making capabilities.
* Ability to quickly establish trust and collaborate effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders from varied backgrounds and experience levels.
* Demonstrates poise, professionalism, and discretion when handling confidential information and sensitive situations.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.
* Experience working with volunteer management databases (Get Connected or similar platforms), including data entry, tracking, and reporting functions.
* Knowledge of nonprofit program operations, particularly within education or youth-serving organizations, with the ability to support key initiatives.
* Experience supporting the planning and execution of community engagement and stewardship events
Education and Experience:
* At least five years' related experience required.
Physical Requirements:
* Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
* Must be able to occasionally travel and work evenings/weekends as required.
