Ph3Transportation Engineer I/II – Texas Department of Transportation /h3 pJoin to apply for the bTransportation Engineer I/II /b role at bTexas Department of Transportation /b. Be among the first 25 applicants. This position offers a unique opportunity to assist in overseeing the District’s 15‑county maintenance program, project development, and pavement preservation program. /p h3Responsibilities /h3 ul liAssists in the development, preparation, and letting of maintenance contracts for the district. /li liDrives/travels to project/work locations to make on‑site engineering reviews, analyses, tests, and provide technical support. /li liMakes presentations and represents TxDOT. /li liPerforms and/or coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications Estimates (PSE) submission, special specifications or provisions. /li liPerforms engineering analysis of statewide pavement conditions and develops reports. /li liPerforms engineering design work such as developing layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts. /li liProvides assistance in preparing reports on pavement conditions. /li liOther job responsibilities as assigned. /li liCoordinates with Area Engineers and reviews area office contract submissions (Transportation Engineer II). /li liTrains engineering staff (Transportation Engineer II). /li liAnalyzes and recommends approval for modifications to highway maintenance contracts (Transportation Engineer II). /li /ul h3Qualifications /h3 ul liEducation: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related science; a higher degree is accepted by TX PELS. /li liExperience: Transportation Engineer I – 4 years; Transportation Engineer II – 5 years. Experience must be in engineering, transportation engineering, or engineering‑related fields. Related graduate-level education may substitute on a year‑per‑year basis. /li liLicenses and Certification: Valid driver’s license (state vehicle required), Safety Impact Certificate, Licensed Professional Engineer. Engineers licensed in another U.S. state must obtain a Texas license within six months of hire. /li /ul h3Competencies /h3 ul liHighway construction design applications /li liPavement maintenance /li liDesign and plan preparation methods and requirements /li liCost estimating and cost controls /li liApplicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes /li liApplying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities /li liPerforming basic design and drafting /li liUsing computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems /li liMaintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others /li liExercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals /li liPavement design and management processes and procedures (Transportation Engineer II) /li liMaintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements (Transportation Engineer II) /li liContract development and oversight (Transportation Engineer II) /li /ul h3Physical Requirements and Working Conditions /h3 ul liSubject to inside and outside environmental conditions. /li liSubject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour. /li liRequired to wear protective gear – respirator, hard hat, or other device. /li liLight work: lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs. /li liBalancing – walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling. /li liCrouching – bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine. /li liStanding – prolonged periods of time. /li liWalking – moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another. /li liFingering – picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand. /li liTalking – expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words. /li liHearing – perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication. /li liClose visual acuity – work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading. /li liVisual Acuity – operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment. /li /ul h3Conditions of Employment /h3 ul liThis job is physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical. /li liMust pass a drug test before employment for Safety Impact positions; random drug testing applies. /li liDoctoral level employees may be subject to standard regulations on medical marijuana. /li liMust attend work regularly and observe approved work hours. /li liRequired to work weekends, holidays, and hours other than 8‑5. /li liRequired to wear personal protective equipment and comply with all safety requirements. /li /ul h3Position Information /h3 pLocation: San Angelo District (smaller city, 100,000 population with friendly atmosphere). Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The position may require travel within the 15‑county maintenance program area.
