We are a growing group within the American Modern organization and this role will take a lead role in managing and continuously improving our internal control testing processes. As the SOX Testing Manager, you’ll be responsible for the management of the testing of internal controls over financial reporting at American Modern in support of MARSOX (Model Audit Rule (MAR) and/ Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX)) requirements. The role will ensure that control testing is completed objectively, professionally, and in accordance with corporate and industry audit standards. The Manager will drive group discussions on the state of testing and offer suggestions on quality improvement and continuous process improvement within the company and the Financial Compliance group. More specifically, the role provides support for the MARSOX process by enhancing/maintaining the end to end mapping of MARSOX controls, identifying control gaps, communicating results of control testing, and working with internal areas to support MARSOX control remediation plans. Additionally, the role supports control testing efforts for other business units (e.g., Compliance) by acting in a “shared service” capacity. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to the following: - Responsible for the management of MARSOX (Annual Financial Reporting Model Audit Rule) control testing across all business units in accordance with established auditing standards. - Oversees MARSOX testing staff, develops test plans, performs reviews of assigned Financial Compliance testing, and concludes on the effectiveness of controls. - Designs comprehensive and practical internal control testing coverage considering degree of risk, significance, and audit frequency of the business area. - Reviews documentation, including testing templates, working papers, and accumulation of evidential matter, in accordance with established audit standards. - Works with business unit management in order to gain understanding of internal controls and business processes. - Effectively communicates control weaknesses and control gaps to business stakeholders and management. - Offers value-added recommendations to business stakeholders and management regarding internal control testing results. Assists in the remediation efforts when needed. - Monitors changes in business processes and systems to ensure timely updating of control documentation to mitigate applicable risks. - Demonstrates development of technical and analytical skills to understand business processes, identify or interpret the associated financial reporting risks and controls, testing approach, and propose solutions. - Develops tools and processes to enhance effectiveness and efficiency of Financial Compliance activities. Supports the development of data analytics, robotic process automation, and/or continuous control monitoring tools to enable control testing automation. - Demonstrates a balanced approach to execution, including a determined effort to support innovation and business enablement, as well as making sure that appropriate synergies are realized without unnecessary business distraction. - Establishes and documents agreement with business units and collaborates with other stakeholders (e.g., Risk and Compliance Leads, Compliance, and IRM) to work through control issues. WE EXPECT: - Five or more years financial statement, operational, and/or IT audit experience IT controls; preferably large corporate Internal Audit or Big 4 accounting firm experience. - Three or more years of SOX testing and review experience required. - Experience leading projects, teams, and reviewing the work of others is required. - CPA, CIA, and/or CISA highly preferred. - Understanding of Statutory Accounting Principles (STAT) with in-depth knowledge of primary property & casualty insurance is preferred. - Understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is a plus. - Industry certifications/designations are a plus (e.g. ARM, MCM, CCEP, CIA, SCLA, CPCU, etc.). - Experience with work optimization processes.
