PPrevious experience in a leadership role within a hospital department of surgery (general, trauma, orthopedic), anesthesia, or surgical emergency medicine. /ppEMERGENCY is seeking experienced Medical Coordinators to oversee the clinical activities of its surgical projects in Afghanistan and Sierra Leone, ensuring the quality of care and compliance with hospital protocols. /ppbCONTEXT AND WORK ORGANIZATION /b /ppThe current recruitment focuses on two countries where the organization has a long-standing presence : Afghanistan and Sierra Leone. /ppbAfghanistan /b /ppEMERGENCY has been working in Afghanistan since 1999 and is currently present in the country with 3 Surgical Centers (in Kabul, Lashkar-Gah, and Anabah), a Maternity Center in Anabah, a network of 40 First Aid Posts and Health Centers, as well as clinics in several prisons across the country. /ppEMERGENCY’s hospital in Kabul is the most important Trauma Center in Afghanistan. It has a facility with 100 inpatient beds, 3 operating rooms, 5 intensive care beds (equipped with ventilators), and a CT scanner. In 2024, approximately 2,900 hospital admissions were recorded, and around 4,450 trauma surgeries were performed. /ppEMERGENCY’s hospital in Anabah is equipped with 60 inpatient beds, 2 operating rooms, and 6 sub-intensive care beds. In 2024, approximately 2,500 hospital admissions were recorded, with around 750 emergency trauma surgeries and 950 elective general surgeries performed. Since 2003, the Anabah Surgical and Pediatric Center has also hosted a Maternity Center, the only specialized and free facility available in the region. A pediatric outpatient clinic is also active within the Center. /ppEMERGENCY’s hospital in Lashkar-Gah is equipped with 100 inpatient beds, 3 operating rooms, and 6 sub-intensive care beds. In 2024, it recorded 6,100 hospital admissions and approximately 6,900 surgical procedures for trauma emergencies. /ppAll three Centers host medical residents specializing in emergency surgery, traumatology, and anesthesia and intensive care, in close collaboration with local authorities. /ppEMERGENCY’s Surgical Center in Goderich, opened in 2001, serves as the referral hospital for surgery and traumatology across Sierra Leone. /ppThe Center is equipped with 3 operating rooms, 6 sub-intensive care beds, and 66 inpatient beds. /ppThe majority of cases involve pediatric patients under 15 years old requiring urgent general surgery or treatment for trauma. Admission criteria for children also include severe burns and caustic soda ingestion with esophageal injuries, for which a unique program has been developed in the country. /ppAdult patients receive care for severe trauma and emergency abdominal conditions. /ppIn 2024, the Goderich Hospital recorded approximately 1,400 admissions and 2,500 surgical procedures. /ppWorking alongside a multidisciplinary team, the Medical Coordinator plays a key role in ensuring the medical and surgical care standards required by EMERGENCY and in promoting effective training within the hospitals. /ppIt is essential for the candidate to demonstrate a willingness to learn and an openness to understanding the approach that EMERGENCY has developed over the years in the contexts where it operates, in order to align clinical activities with the organization’s principles and practices. /ppThe role requires close collaboration in the field with the Medical and Surgical Department Heads and the Head Nurse, as well as coordination with the Medical and Nursing Management (Main Office) to ensure alignment on clinical direction and objectives. /ppDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES /ppbClinic Management : /b /pulliLead clinical activities within the hospital, ensuring full adherence to EMERGENCY’s protocols and guidelines. /liliOversee patient flow and optimize processes to improve the quality of services provided. /liliSupervise the diagnostic and treatment procedures for complex conditions, with a particular focus on therapeutic appropriateness. /li /ulpbQuality and safety : /b /pulliEnsure the quality of care and patient safety by monitoring clinical outcomes. /liliSupervise the proper use of diagnostic and therapeutic resources. /liliOversee accurate documentation of clinical activities. /liliMaintain clear communication with patients’ families regarding care plans and expectations. /li /ulpbProtocol Development : /b /pulliCollaborate in updating and monitoring clinical protocols and therapeutic guidelines in coordination with the medical and nursing directors and EMERGENCY’s Medical Division. /liliWork with other units and specialties to ensure an integrated approach to patient care. /li /ulpbLeadership, Training and Development : /b /pulliLead and motivate the clinical team, fostering a collaborative and learning environment. /liliEnsure the implementation of training programs in collaboration with the medical and nursing training coordinators. /liliEvaluate the competencies of healthcare professionals to ensure they meet patient care standards, promoting a culture of feedback and organizing regular meetings to discuss performance and share experiences. /li /ulpbResource Management : /b /pulliManage the clinical team, ensuring operational efficiency and smooth communication. /liliAnalyze and evaluate the team’s professional needs (e.g., doctors, nurses, technical staff) in terms of required skills and expertise. /liliIdentify gaps or excesses in staffing levels and propose solutions to ensure adequate coverage and effective role distribution. /liliCollaborate with management to plan budgets and optimize available resources. /liliDefine work schedules based on clinical needs, internal policies, and local labor laws. /liliOversee punctuality and adherence to organizational rules. /li /ulpbData Monitoring : /b /pulliBe open to acquiring proficiency in using both analog and digital systems for monitoring clinical activities. /li /ulpbCollaboration with Non-Clinical Departments : /b /pulliEstablish close collaboration with non-clinical departments (logistics, technical, administrative, HR, and grant management) to ensure optimal workflows, a synergistic work environment, and effective communication. /li /ulpbREQUIREMENTS /b /pulliMedical degree with a specialization in Surgery, Anesthesia and Intensive Care, or Emergency Medicine. /liliPrevious experience in a leadership role within a hospital department of surgery (general, trauma, orthopedic), anesthesia, or surgical emergency medicine. /liliCommitment and willingness to understand EMERGENCY’s approach, adapting to the specific context of our hospitals. /liliAvailability to work in the field for at least one year (the first six months of the contract will be considered a probationary period). /liliExcellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong ability to promote teamwork and collaboration among team members. /liliAbility to work in a dynamic environment and manage high-stress situations. /liliCapacity to work and live in a community setting, demonstrating a collaborative attitude and mutual respect.
