Ph312768 - Satellite and Atmospheric Data assimilation Scientist /h3 pbCMCC Position cod. 12768 /b /p pDeadline: January 31st, 2026 /p pbWhat We Are Looking For /b /p pOur Institute for Earth System Predictions (IESP) is looking for a new position of Satellite and Atmospheric Data assimilation Scientist, located in Bologna, responsible for supporting the scientific plan. /p pbAbout Us /b /p pCMCC Foundation is a cross‑cutting scientific research center on climate change and its interactions with the environment, society, the world of business, and policymakers. Our work aims to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment, and develop strategies for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change. CMCC's core objective is to conduct cutting‑edge science, train the next generation of scientists, and be a beacon for climate modelling. CMCC pursues fundamental and applied science with utmost scientific integrity, prioritizing data‑driven science and providing data, information, and research results that can support informed public debate and decision‑making processes. /p pbRole /b /p pThe Euro‑Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) is seeking a motivated scientist to join the development of the Scalable PaRallelised EArth Data Assimilation System (SPREADS), an ensemble Kalman filter built on the open‑source DART framework. SPREADS assimilates millions of observations, including satellite radiances, and is evolving into a weakly coupled system for atmosphere, land, and ocean components. The position will initially focus on the assimilation of hyperspectral infrared radiances from new instruments such as IASI‑NG, MTG‑IRS, and CrIS, using RTTOV. Novel algorithmic approaches and the application of machine learning methods are strongly encouraged. The goal is to improve the representation of the atmospheric state and enhance forecast skill from the sub‑seasonal to seasonal timescales. We are looking for a dynamic researcher with strong problem‑solving skills, the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, and a proactive attitude toward adapting to evolving priorities. /p pbResponsibilities /b /p ul liAssimilate radiance measurements from new hyperspectral infrared instruments (IASING, MTG‑IRS, CrIS) using the RTTOV forward operator; /li liDevelop and test novel algorithms to enhance radiance assimilation; /li liApply machine learning methods to improve the representation of atmospheric states; /li liExtend assimilation to additional satellite instruments beyond infrared, including microwave radiances, GNSS radio occultation, and imager data. /li /ul pbRequirements /b /p ul liPhD and University degree in Physics, Maths, Meteorology or related fields; /li liAt least 10 years of relevant work experience; /li liGood knowledge of satellite observations and data assimilation; /li liStrong computing skills, including the Unix/Linux environment, Fortran and possibly C++ language, Python and IDL. /li /ul pbDuration, Compensation Benefits /b /p ul liOpportunity will be issued both internally and externally; /li liManagers will be based in Bologna CMCC office; /li liContract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience; /li liAppointment period initially of 24 months starting from January 2026; /li liWelfare package, for minimum 12 months contract; /li liFlexible working time as per internal policies; /li liSupport during the immigration process, if needed. /li /ul pbProtected Category /b /p pBelonging to legally protected categories (ex L.68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.
