The College is looking to appoint three 50% part-time Residence Assistants on a 9-month fixed-term contract to start in August 16th 2023 and terminate on May 31st 2024 for a total number of 833 working hours.
The College
UWC Adriatic is a member of the United World College movement, currently made up of 18 schools and colleges across the world. We are a values-driven institution that seeks to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.
Located on an open campus in the picturesque village of Duino in the north-east of Italy, 25 kilometres away from the city of Trieste, the College is currently home to approximately 185 students, aged 16 to 19. Our policy of deliberate diversity is key to our mission and as a result, students come from over 80 countries as well as a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. Currently, 85% of the student body agevolazioni from a full or partial scholarship in order to pursue their education at UWC Adriatic.
The residential education programme offered by the College places equal emphasis on academic and co-curricular learning experiences. Our students undertake the International Baccalaureate Diploma, a rigorous pre-university qualification, through the medium of English. All students are also required to engage fully in service-based learning, ecological and outdoor education, physical and cultural activities, as well as social and emotional learning. In addition, the UWC Adriatic educational experience draws inspiration from the surrounding rich Italian culture including art, music, architecture, history and regional languages that stimulate our students’ creativity and reflections.
The Post
The Residence Assistants play a vital role in the residential and educational life of students and are a reassuring adult presence in the village and in the residences. They support the Residence Tutors in ensuring the safe and healthy functioning of residences, and the wellbeing of our students. They are valued and important members of the UWC Adriatic’s Pastoral Care team, and through their specific duties, know, support and advise students at the college.
Typical responsibilities of the Residence Assistant will include community building, and application of College policies. Being consistently present in the residences during the established hours and available to students is requisite to a successful performance as a Residence Assistant. They will be required to facilitate problem-solving with a curious mind and critical thinking skills.
Specific Job Description
Community Building
- Be a reassuring presence, especially around curfew time, and create a sense of community while simultaneously completing student check-in
- Organise social events in the residences
Community Norms
Monitor and apply the rules and expectations established by the College for residential life and communicate infractions to the Residence Tutor. Specific tasks include:
- Checking the sign in and sign out sheets that are placed in residences, and follow up with students who haven’t signed back in.
- Monitoring quiet time in the residences.
- Checking that students have returned to their respective residence by curfew (10:30 pm from Sunday to Thursday, 12:00 am on Friday and Saturday).
- Support the Teacher on Duty at weekends.
Health & Safety
- Check the cleanliness and respect of safety regulations of student rooms
- Inform Residence Tutors of maintenance needs
- Perform monthly Health and Safety checks and complete the required form
Residence Assistants live in the village of Duino and work under the direction of and report to the Deputy Head (Pastoral).
Working Hours
- 7:30 pm - 11:30 pm: Sunday to Thursday (All 3 RA’s on duty);
- 7:30 pm - 12:30 am: Friday & Saturday (Every 3rd Weekend);
- 1 additional working hour per week during term time to be decided in agreement with the Rettore.
UWC Adriatic is a small boarding college which offers students and staff the opportunity to engage intensely in the educational experience of the students. Any suitable applicant must work in a collaborative and consultative manner and understand the need for constructive intervention and patience as essential components of non-curricular learning that occurs in an environment of empowering students for taking the next step towards independence.
A significant amount of the work conducted requires an appropriate proficiency in English. It is therefore a requirement of this position that the post-holder speaks English at a high level.
Remuneration and employment details
The post-holder will be paid a salary based on the experience and in line with the college’s pay scale. The appointment will be on level D of the Federculture national labour contract.
For this appointment, only EU/EEA/Swiss nationals or nationals of other countries in possession of a valid long-term Italian work residence permit will be accepted.
