Pipein is transforming how critical infrastructure is inspected and maintained across water and wastewater systems, energy assets, and underwater and large-scale civil infrastructure. We are a fast-moving Deep Tech startup developing DDS3, an integrated robotic and software system that combines advanced inspection robots with a digital platform to operate inside pipelines, tunnels, and complex confined environments. DDS3 converts inspection data into actionable insights for smarter asset management, risk reduction, and predictive maintenance.
We are entering a phase where our technology is scaling and being deployed more broadly in the field. To support this growth, we are hiring talented individuals to join our team. Over the next months, we plan to scale the size of the company, making this a unique moment to join Pipein and help shape the future of our technology.
The Role
We are looking for a hands-on Integration & Testing Engineer to support the integration, testing, maintenance, and validation of our robotic systems, working across field operations, lab activities, and R&D; support.
This is a practical engineering role at the intersection of R&D;, lab testing, and field operations. Your main focus will be making sure our robotic subsystems, sensors, and accessories are correctly assembled, tested and ready for deployment.
You will work on both existing platforms and new developments: assembling systems, creating and supporting test setups, debugging hardware and firmware issues, maintaining robotic components, and helping validate new solutions before they are used in the field. Operations will have priority when support is needed, but the role is not limited to field or deployment activities: when not supporting operations, you will contribute to lab work, component testing, test automation, and the development and validation of new systems.
We are looking for someone who is comfortable working directly on hardware and embedded systems, solving real technical problems, and doing practical engineering work rather than purely theoretical or research-oriented activities. You will work closely with robotics, mechanical, electronics, and software engineers in a fast-moving deep-tech environment where practical problem solving, adaptability, and ownership are essential.
What You Will Do
- System Assembly & Integration: You will assemble, integrate, and maintain robotic systems, accessories, sensors, and subsystems, supporting both existing platforms and new developments.
- Testing, Maintenance & Repair: You will support system testing and validation activities to help ensure the robots are operational, reliable, and ready for deployment in real-world conditions. You will also contribute to the maintenance and repair of robotic assets, sensors, and electronics, including practical hardware work such as soldering, cable management, component replacements, and system rework.
- Operational & Workshop Support: You will support day-to-day engineering and field activities, including workshop tasks, inventory management, preparation of systems for deployment, and technical support during testing activities.
- Hardware, Firmware & R&D; Support: When issues arise, you will help troubleshoot hardware and firmware problems on both custom and off-the-shelf components, identifying root causes and implementing practical fixes. You will also support the R&D; team, when needed, by testing new hardware, firmware, and system improvements and bringing practical feedback from lab and field activities into the development process.
Who We Are Looking For
- A Practical Problem Solver: You are comfortable diagnosing issues, troubleshooting systems, and finding solutions under operational constraints. You enjoy understanding how systems work and fixing problems.
- Hands-On Engineering Mindset: You are comfortable working with electronics, robotic systems, sensors, and embedded hardware, and prefer practical engineering work over purely theoretical activities. You are also comfortable with activities such as soldering, wiring, hardware maintenance, system debugging, and general lab or workshop work.
- Linux & technical environments: You are comfortable working in Linux environments and using technical tools as part of your workflow.
- Hardware & Firmware Troubleshooting Skills: You have experience debugging hardware and embedded systems, and are comfortable identifying issues across electronics, firmware, wiring, communication interfaces, and system-level interactions.
- Adaptable & Reliable: This is a startup environment where priorities can evolve quickly. You are comfortable switching between assembly, operational support activities, debugging, testing, and logistics when needed.
- Ownership & Initiative: You take responsibility for your work and do not wait for detailed instructions. When something is not working properly, you proactively work to understand and improve it.
Education & Work Experience
- Degree in electronics, mechatronics, robotics or related fields is appreciated. Alternative educational paths will also be considered if supported by strong practical experience and technical skills.
- 1–3 Years Experience: You are early in your career but driven, curious, and eager to take ownership. We value motivation, learning speed, and initiative as much as formal experience. Experience gained through student teams (Formula Student, robotics competitions, rocketry, maker projects, etc.) or personal technical projects is highly valued.
- English Fluency (B2 or higher): The day to day and all internal communications will be in English. Essential for technical documentation and collaboration with the team.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with hardware design or PCB-related activities.
- Basic CAD skills for simple mechanical integration activities.
- Experience with Python, scripting, or test automation tools.
- Experience working in laboratories, workshops, prototyping environments, or field operations.
Why Join Pipein?
- Work on real robotic systems: Your work will directly impact robotic platforms operating in real-world environments and inspection activities.
- Hands-on engineering role: This is a practical engineering role where you will work directly on systems, hardware, integration, testing, and troubleshooting activities every day.
- Exposure to multidisciplinary systems: You will work across robotics, electronics, embedded systems, mechanics, sensors, and field activities, gaining broad system-level experience.
- Direct exposure to decisions and development: You will work closely with founders and engineers, contributing directly to technical improvements, testing activities, and the evolution of the robotic platform.
- An important role in a growing startup: You will be part of a small team, contributing directly to the reliability and operation of systems that are central to the company's growth.
What We Offer
- Competitive Salary: A package aligned with your experience and responsibilities, with a typical range of €30,000 - €40,000 gross per year (RAL), and room to grow as the company scales.
- Flexible Working Hours: Flexibility in working hours when compatible with current activities.
- Startup Engineering Experience: Hands-on involvement in a growing deep-tech robotics startup, working directly on robotic systems through testing, maintenance, debugging, validation, and real-world field activities.
Selection Process
Our hiring process aims at giving both you and us a clear understanding of whether there is a strong mutual fit.
- Introductory Interview (30 min): An initial conversation focused on your background, technical experience, motivation, and practical interests.
- Technical Interview (45 minutes): A deeper discussion with members of our technical team. We will explore your hands-on experience, core technical skills to understand how you think and work.
- In-Person Technical Interview (2-3 hours): You will spend some time with the team working on real problems. xlwpduy This final interview is designed to assess your problem-solving approach, technical skills, and attitude, while giving you firsthand exposure to the team and everyday working environment to determine whether Pipein is the right fit for you.
