Economist (Food Security Early Warning)
We’re seeking an Economist for Food Security Early Warning within the Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS) Team of the Markets and Trade Division (EST) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.
Responsibilities
- Plan and lead multidisciplinary teams and short‑term work groups.
- Develop technical, statistical and analytical tools, methodologies and databases to support programme implementation.
- Collect, validate, analyse and report on food supply/demand, crop production, consumption, trade, stocks, prices and policies.
- Contribute to GIEWS analytical work, studies and publications, including periodical reports and partnership‑based releases.
- Lead the preparation of studies, technical papers and reports on early warning and food security.
- Update and upgrade GIEWS methodologies using new tools such as AI and machine learning.
- Engage with FAO divisions, partners and national/international institutions to strengthen food‑security information networks.
- Organise and participate in Crop and Food Security Assessment Missions (CFSAMs) to assess agricultural production and food‑security situations.
- Build and maintain networks to ensure regular flow of information to GIEWS; provide technical support on monitoring and assessment methods.
- Provide technical support for capacity‑development projects in early‑warning information systems and food‑security analysis.
- Prepare briefs, notes, speaking points, speeches and presentations for senior management.
- Participate in meetings and media interviews related to the GIEWS mandate and contribute to resource‑mobilisation proposals.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in economics, agricultural economics or a related field.
- Seven years of experience in economic analysis of agriculture and food security.
- Proficiency in English (Level C) and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language.
- Experience monitoring, analysing and assessing food security for early warning in developing countries.
- Experience planning and conducting economic analysis related to food production, consumption, stocks, trade, policies and prices of basic food commodities.
- Experience developing and maintaining partnerships and collaborative arrangements with national and international institutions for early warning.
- Familiarity with food and agriculture information systems and methods of monitoring and assessing food security using relevant indicators.
- Statistical skills to analyse large data sets related to agriculture, commodity markets and food security.
- Strong written and verbal communication; able to present clearly and concisely.
- Teamwork orientation and ability to work under strict deadlines.
- Experience in developing project proposals and in resource mobilisation.
