ABOUT THE ROLE – Umbilical & Fiber Optic Engineer (Oil & Gas / Offshore Projects)
We are looking for an Umbilical & Fiber Optic Engineer to join a leading international PMC organization on a major offshore Oil & Gas development project.
Reporting to the Sealine & SPS Work Package Project Manager, the resource will be responsible for the technical oversight and engineering assurance of subsea umbilical systems and fiber optic infrastructure — from design review and vendor management through fabrication, offshore installation, and commissioning.
Location: Milan (office-based, 5 days/week)
Key Responsibilities
1. Engineering & Design Assurance
Review and approve EPC contractor deliverables: technical specifications, datasheets, installation drawings, and test procedures for umbilical and fiber optic systems.
Ensure compliance with applicable international standards (API 17E, ISO 13628-5, DNV-ST-F101, IEEE 1718).
Coordinate technical interfaces between umbilical/fiber systems and subsea control systems (SCM, MCS, HPU) and topside facilities (DCS/SCADA).
Participate in design reviews, HAZID, HAZOP, and constructability reviews.
2. Procurement & Vendor Management
Support preparation of Material Requisitions and Technical Bid Evaluations (TBE) for umbilical packages and fiber optic systems.
Attend and review FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) and SIT (System Integration Test) activities at vendor facilities.
Monitor vendor performance and ensure timely resolution of technical queries.
3. Fabrication & Installation Oversight
Supervise fabrication, spooling, and testing of umbilicals and fiber optic cables.
Coordinate with offshore installation teams for load-out, lay operations, pull-in, and tie-in activities.
Interface with ROV teams, DP vessels, and marine contractors during offshore campaigns.
4. Commissioning & Testing
Supervise post-installation commissioning and integrity testing: hydrostatic tests, OTDR testing for fiber optic systems, and electrical continuity tests.
Ensure system readiness for handover to operations, including punch list clearance and as-built documentation.
5. Reporting & Documentation
Prepare weekly and monthly technical progress reports for management and client.
Manage NCRs, punch lists, and final documentation packages.
Ensure full traceability of technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
Project Scope & Interfaces
Key activities: Umbilical fabrication and spooling, FAT/SIT at vendor facilities, offshore installation (pull-in, tie-in, ROV operations), post-installation commissioning, and system handover.
Challenges: Coordination between subsea control systems and topside integration, management of offshore installation campaigns, and multi-vendor interface resolution.
Interfaces: EPC contractors, subsea equipment vendors, offshore installation crews, ROV teams, topside I&C and DCS teams, marine logistics.
Key Competencies
Strong technical knowledge of subsea umbilical systems and fiber optic infrastructure.
Ability to manage multi-discipline interfaces between subsea, topside, and marine teams.
Excellent analytical, communication, and reporting skills.
Ability to work under pressure and manage complex offshore execution challenges.
Proactive mindset in identifying and resolving technical and operational risks.
Requirements
Bachelor's Degree (BSc) in Electrical, Electronic, Subsea, or Mechanical Engineering.
Minimum 10 years of experience in offshore Oil & Gas projects with focus on subsea umbilical systems and/or fiber optic infrastructure.
Strong knowledge of umbilical design, fabrication, and installation: UTA, connectors, end terminations.
Knowledge of subsea fiber optic systems: OTDR testing, splicing, and mechanical protection.
Familiarity with subsea control systems (SCM, MCS, HPU) and their topside integration.
Experience with offshore installation operations: ROV, DP vessels, pipelay.
Knowledge of standards: API 17E, ISO 13628-5, DNV-ST-F101, IEEE 1718.
Excellent spoken and written English.
BOSIET/FOET certification — preferred.
