New Call for GSSI PhD Applications 2025/26 Now Open
51 Scholarships Available for the GSSI PhD Program
The Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) has announced its new call for applications for the forty-first cycle of PhD programs. The academic year begins on 1 November, with five additional places available compared to last year, totaling 51 positions.
Positions are available across four four-year academic programs: 13 in Astroparticle Physics, 12 in Computer Science, 12 in Regional Science and Economic Geography, and 14 in Mathematics in Natural, Social, and Life Sciences. The Mathematics program has already scheduled its first selection session, leaving 8 positions for the summer session.
Funding is provided by Italian and EU research funds for three scholarships: one in Physics (Astrocent Plus project, Horizon-CSA funds), one in Mathematics (CardioTrials project, ERC funds), and one in Fluid Dynamics (Holes in the Heart project, Prin funds).
New doctoral students will join the 170 students already enrolled in L'Aquila. GSSI, established after the earthquake, counts 80 professors and researchers and over 50 post-docs. Since 2012, it has awarded over 230 PhDs.
The scholarship offers a gross annual amount of €16,243, accommodation or a substitute grant, board, and other benefits. Applications must be submitted exclusively online via www.gssi.it/phd/. Applications sent by other means will not be accepted.
Application deadlines are as follows:
* 23 May 2025 at 3 p.m. (Italian time) for Regional Science and Economic Geography
* 30 May 2025 at 3 p.m. (Italian time) for Astroparticle Physics and Computer Science
* 9 June 2025 at 3 p.m. (Italian time) for Mathematics (6 positions)
* 29 August 2025 at 3 p.m. (Italian time) for two project-based scholarships in Mathematics
GSSI is an international PhD school and research center in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Social Sciences. Founded in 2012 in L’Aquila, Italy, it became a School of Advanced Studies in 2016, offering postgraduate education and fostering international collaboration. GSSI promotes interdisciplinary research, societal engagement, and cultural activities, with a diverse student body and partnerships across Europe and worldwide.
