Your Purpose
We are pleased to be hiring for a BOH (Back of House) Design Specialist to join our growing Architecture & Design Department. In this role you will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and optimizing the design of all Back of House areas onboard new ship concepts. The focus extends beyond catering spaces to include all operational support areas behind the scenes — such as galleys, pantries, crew service corridors, storage areas, embarkation areas, provision stores, technical service connections, crew workstations, and other operational spaces that ensure the efficient support of Front of House functions.
Working in close collaboration with F&B;, Culinary Operations, Technical, Marine, Housekeeping, Interior Design, and other operational departments, the position ensures that BOH layouts are functional, efficient, and compliant with operational workflows, health and safety regulations, and international maritime standards.
The role actively contributes to integrating BOH layouts within the overall ship concept design, managing inputs from external consultants, shipyards, and equipment suppliers, and reviewing design packages throughout the project lifecycle. It also supports plan approval activities, participates in design reviews and onboard inspections, and contributes to the development and continuous improvement of BOH design standards and guidelines to ensure operational excellence and consistency across the fleet.
Your Impact
- Supports operational departments (F&B;, Culinary, Housekeeping, Technical, Marine, etc.) in defining functional and efficient BOH layouts across all new concept design projects.
- Develops and optimizes layouts for galleys, pantries, service stations, crew corridors, storage areas, embarkation zones, provision, laundry and other operational support spaces.
- Ensures BOH layouts are designed with a strong focus on workflow efficiency, circulation, logistics, safety, ergonomics, and operational connectivity with Front of House areas.
- Ensures compliance with health & safety regulations, maritime standards, and operational best practices.
- Collaborates closely with Concept Design and Interior Design teams to integrate BOH areas seamlessly within the broader architectural and ship design framework.
- Analyses space constraints, operational flows, equipment requirements, and logistical connections to optimize performance and avoid conflicts.
- Coordinates with external consultants, shipyards, and equipment suppliers to validate layout proposals and technical requirements.
- Reviews and adjusts layouts based on operational feedback, regulatory updates, and design evolution throughout the project lifecycle.
- Supports the Plan Approval process by reviewing Yard/Contractor drawings related to BOH areas.
- Participates in cross-functional design review meetings and contributes to the development of BOH design standards and guidelines.
- Contributes to USPHS inspections onboard and cooperates with Yard teams to support proper delivery of BOH areas.
Your Journey so far
- 1-3 year experience working in catering development is preferred.
- Demonstrable strong 2D skills using AutoCAD / MicroStation / Rhino / Sketchup or similar.
- Fluent in communicating through multiple channels including presentations, reports, and documentation.
- Ability to review and interpret technical drawings, product datasheets, and supplier specifications.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills within international, multidisciplinary teams.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
