ASA Summer Undergraduate Research and Internship Experience in Acoustics (SURIEA) Position Title: Cohort Coordinator for the ASA Summer Undergraduate Research and Internship Experience in Acoustics (SURIEA) Location: Remote with some travel Full description of the position and SURIEA program overview: The Acoustical Society of America (ASA) is seeking to hire one Cohort Co-Coordinator for the SURIEA program, with a core period between May 25 – August 1, 2025. We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow or current graduate student with mentoring experience to coordinate the SURIEA program alongside one additional co-coordinator. The SURIEA program offers undergraduate students from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups in acoustics (such as Black, Latina/o, Native American, Alaskan Native) the opportunity to engage in summer research or industry projects. Participants will meet virtually as a group and individually with the Cohort Co-Coordinators weekly to discuss their experiences and explore academic and career opportunities in acoustics or related fields. The coordinators will receive compensation of $3,000 (pre-tax) and travel funds to attend the SURIEA Acoustics Short Course and two ASA Meetings. Key responsibilities include: Responsibilities: Conduct weekly virtual group meetings (~1 hour) with the cohort. Facilitate discussions on topics such as applying to graduate school, attending conferences, writing papers, presenting posters/research, and work/life balance. Organize engaging activities like games and icebreakers to promote meaningful interactions. Meet weekly with each cohort member individually (~15 minutes). Monitor individual progress, help set and track personal/professional goals, and address challenges. Coordinate with the co-coordinator and the SURIEA organizing committee to resolve issues. Utilize appropriate technology for virtual interactions. Invite guest speakers related to acoustics and career development. Additional tasks: Connect cohort members with ASA members, industry professionals, and graduate students for mentorship and field-specific insights. Anticipated Commitment: Approximately 10 hours per week from May to August 2025. Participate in diversity and inclusion training sessions. Maintain ongoing communication to support cohort activities throughout the academic year. Desired Skills: Passion for supporting underrepresented students and promoting diversity in acoustics. Background in an acoustics-related field. Familiarity with ASA and its activities. Experience with graduate studies and conference participation. Excellent communication skills (written and oral). Experience in undergraduate education and outreach. Ability to organize and facilitate effective meetings and activities. Comfort with learning and using social media and software tools for virtual engagement. Experience mentoring college-aged students, including principles and best practices.
