Join to apply for the General Engineering Tech I/II role at Texas Department of Transportation.

Our maintenance team is seeking a motivated and skilled General Engineering Tech to support the daily operation, repair, and improvement of our state infrastructure.


Essential Duties – General Engineering Tech I

* Identify, analyze, and implement solutions for complex maintenance problems.
* Inspect construction and routine/non‑routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
* May train other employees.
* Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.


Essential Duties – General Engineering Tech II

* Inspect complex maintenance and construction‑related work, including hot mix overlay, to ensure compliance with safety, laws and regulations, contract specifications and departmental procedures.
* Prepare plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) using automated programs; review plans, enter data, update, store and maintain PS&E documents and files.
* Lead, assign, review, and monitor the work of others.
* Train in a classroom, office, or field environment.
* Plan, coordinate and handle multiple projects within the area of responsibility to meet short and long‑term deadlines.


Minimum Qualifications

* Education: High School Graduate or equivalent in general high school studies.
* Experience: General Engineering Tech I – 4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). General Engineering Tech II – 6 years in related experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent).
* Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.


Licenses and Certifications

* Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.


Core Competencies (Tech I)

* Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques.
* Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
* Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements.
* Use of computers, applicable programs, applications and systems.
* Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.


Core Competencies (Tech II)

* Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.
* Training in a classroom, office, or field environment.
* Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within the area of responsibility to meet short and long‑term deadlines.


Physical and Work Conditions

* Physical Requirements: Light work – lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs; prolonged standing; walking and moving on foot; speaking; close visual acuity for data/figures and computer use.
* Job is physically demanding and requires a pre‑employment physical.
* Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety‑impact positions.
* Required to work during emergency situations after hours, on weekends or holidays, and during inclement weather.
* Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
* Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.

General Engineering Tech I (A19): $48,244 – $76,028 annually
General Engineering Tech II (A20): $51,158 – $81,351 annually

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
