Overview
AWS is introducing the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) and is seeking experienced development engineering leaders with a strong background in development management and operations. You will be part of the AWS Managed Operations team, building and leading operations and development teams delivering high-availability AWS services (EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, Bedrock) exclusively for EU customers. The ESC launch is targeted for 2025, with collaboration across AWS global teams to influence the evolution of AWS services and technology.
The role emphasizes automation and engineering efficiency, focusing on delivering scalable services and a high-availability experience for EU customers.
Responsibilities
* Lead your team in executing organizational and team roadmaps, focusing on automation goals.
* Provide regular check-ins and strategic guidance to foster collaboration and shared success.
* Analyze systems and software performance, identify areas for improvement, and shape strategies to enhance overall efficiency.
* Foster cross-departmental collaboration to strengthen relationships with other teams and streamline processes.
* Build coaching and mentoring programs to ensure a skilled and invested workforce.
* Regularly review key performance metrics to align team efforts with business objectives and foster a results-driven environment.
* Identify successes and areas for improvement to prepare teams for launch challenges and opportunities.
* This position may involve on-call responsibilities and escalation calls.
Eligibility & Team Context
* Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
* Candidate must be a national of an EU member state and reside in the EU to operate the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
* Amazon will provide relocation support for successful applicants relocating within the European Union.
* Employees will participate in an on-call rota.
Basic Qualifications
* This role requires you to be a national of an EU member state.
* Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent work experience.
* Demonstrated software development or systems experience (including hands-on development and object-oriented design) with a proven track record of high-scale hiring and talent management across multiple disciplines/job families.
* Systems engineering experience (e.g., virtualization, hardware design, operating system tuning) and experience building scalable infrastructure software or distributed systems.
* Knowledge of professional software engineering practices and the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
Preferred Qualifications
* Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
* Strong fundamentals in networking, network services, and operating systems.
* Experience leading development life cycle processes, especially deployment automation and monitoring.
* Strong program and product management skills.
* Experience with distributed systems at scale, including AWS platforms, services and design patterns.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong sense of ownership and commitment to operational excellence.
