Overview Equipment Operator - Special Jobs San Angelo role with the Texas Department of Transportation. This position performs complex transportation maintenance work operating heavy equipment and requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level work independently on assignments; unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties
Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites and assists stranded motorists as required.
Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader and equipment including a small-capacity loader, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
Operates one or more types of complex heavy equipment such as tractor-trailer haul truck, motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt profiling/milling machine and dump truck.
Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment; assists with moving equipment/tools, materials and attachments as needed.
Operates tractor-trailer haul trucks to relocate heavy and light equipment, including loading, securing, and unloading on haul trailers.
Operates heavy equipment such as front-end loaders (1.5+ cubic yards), large draglines, shovels, and paint striper.
Performs highly complex transportation maintenance and roadway repairs with heavy equipment.
Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, assists the public and performs other work during emergencies (floods, storms, accidents, etc.).
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education : No education required.
Experience : 1 year experience in maintenance and/or construction equipment operation. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
Licenses and Certifications :
Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Must have a valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for equipment operation at time of application.
Must have or obtain an "N" (tanker) endorsement and remove any transmission restriction within 60 calendar days of hire.

Subject to atmospheric conditions - fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
Medium work - Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
Balancing - walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
Conditions of Employment
This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
Note: Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation does not authorize medical marijuana as a valid reason for a positive drug test result.
Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergencies.
Required to work during emergency situations after hours, on weekends or holidays.
Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
Must wear PPE provided by employer and comply with safety requirements.
Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
