Reporting Lines The Senior Economist reports to the Director, ESA. Technical Focus This position will lead the division work related to food security and nutrition and resilience (FSN-R), with primary responsibility for overseeing the editorial process of the SOFI report and guiding the work on resilience. It involves managing and contributing to technical analysis in support of the FSN-R pillar, ensuring the integration of evidence-based insights into reports and related outputs. The role will foster collaboration with UN agencies, research centres, and academic institutions to strengthen analytical foundations. Additionally, it provides policy advice grounded in robust evidence to support national and international efforts to enhance FSN and resilience. Key Results Leadership and conceptual thinking for developing and implementing comprehensive technical, statistical, and analytical frameworks supporting the FAO Strategic Framework. Key Functions Manage or lead multidisciplinary teams and provide technical leadership in policy analysis, policy networks, and international policy bodies. Lead work by Technical or Policy Officers in regional offices, collaborating with headquarters on policy and governance under the FAO Strategic Framework. Advocate for strategic partnerships, best practices, and policy dialogue to improve policies for food security, nutrition, sustainable agriculture, and food systems. Engage with UN Regional and Country Teams to enhance cross-sectoral policies in agriculture, food security, and sustainable development. Collaborate with development partners, including financial institutions, to link knowledge and policy work with investments. Analyze regional and country issues to inform priorities and requirements. Design, implement, and monitor policy work programmes, supporting budgets and resources. Organize capacity development activities, providing technical advice and developing related materials and online tools. Represent FAO at international and inter-governmental meetings and conferences. Specific Functions Lead the preparation of the SOFI report and other analytical, technical, and knowledge products related to FSN-R. Oversee development and application of innovative methodologies to assess food security, nutrition, and resilience outcomes. Ensure evidence-based analysis is integrated into FSN-R workstreams, maintaining consistency and relevance. Provide technical leadership and mentorship, supporting advanced economic techniques like econometric modeling and impact evaluation. Collaborate with UN agencies, development partners, and governments to strengthen cross-sectoral policies. Build partnerships with academic and research institutions to enhance scientific foundations. Contribute to policy advice and technical assistance to support countries in FSN and resilience policies. CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING Minimum Requirements Master’s degree or equivalent in economics, agricultural economics, or related fields. At least ten years of experience in economic analysis related to food security and nutrition. Proficiency in English (Level C) and intermediate knowledge (Level B) of another FAO official language. Competencies Results Focus Leading, Engaging, and Empowering Communication Partnering and Advocating Knowledge Sharing and Continuous Improvement Strategic Thinking Technical / Functional Skills Experience in multiple locations, especially in field positions. Experience in drafting and coordinating high-level analytical reports in multilateral contexts. Experience in multidisciplinary economic analysis across thematic areas. Understanding of policy processes at global, regional, and national levels related to food security and resilience. Ability to assess scientific evidence and translate into policy recommendations. Experience in policy analysis and advice on FSN and resilience at various levels. Knowledge of resilience concepts and measurement approaches. Ability to work collaboratively in multicultural teams and foster partnerships. FAO may choose not to fill the position. Medical fitness, accreditation, residency, visa, and security clearances are required for appointment.
