This position serves as a registered cardiac sonographer in the echocardiography laboratory and at the cardiology satellite offices. The cardiac sonographer III is required to perform all aspects of an echocardiographic exam, have a strong knowledge of cardiac pathology/echo equipment and work with students/staff. The cardiac sonographer III also contributes skills to assist with an efficient operation of the department. Perform other duties as assigned.
What You Will Do
* Performs clinical and advanced research m-Mode, 2-D, CFM, Doppler, TEE (if applicable), Stress, Pharmacologic, strain, and 3D echocardiograms independently, per lab standards at all satellites. Orients to structural heart procedures and performs as needed once competent (if applicable).
* Maintains competency in scanning all patient types (ICU/OR/ER), if applicable.
* Requests assistance with technically challenging studies.
* Recognizes cardiac pathology and life threatening situations and intervenes appropriately.
* Precepts students/sonographers in orientation, mentors cardiology Fellows and facilitates training sessions as needed.
* Participates in the on-call system (when applicable)
* Performs EKG's and Holter/Event monitors (if applicable)
* Participates in rounds/conferences.
* Completes documentation (written / computerized) including verification of demographic data to ensure proper billing.
* Maintains a clean environment, and alerts the proper personnel when supplies are low. Performs departmental environment of care tracers as needed with immediate follow-up on deficient items.
* Demonstrates behavior which impacts the productivity, efficiency, and quality of communication and collaboration in the department. Demonstrates best practices relating to echo lab workflow and teamwork.
* Mentors junior Sonographer staff. Presents educational in-services at least once/year. Prepares and presents at least one, up to two echo-related posters or talks per year.
Additional Responsibilities
* Initiates and directs projects/QI processes/problem solving initiatives with peers and/or hospital leadership.
* Participates in echo research through the development of IRB protocols and data collection (if applicable).
* Presents an echo related topic at a regional or national venue (exceeds expectations).
* Ability to assist staff with Echo Lab PACS system.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
* Complies with all policies and standards.

* Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
Education
* High School Equivalent / GED (Required) and
* Graduate of an approved Cardiovascular Technology or Cardiac Sonography Program (Required) or
* Graduate of an approved Sonography Program with cross-training in echocardiography (Required)
* Member of the American Society of Echocardiography (Required)
* Achievement of FASE status through the American Society of Echocardiography (Preferred)
Work Experience
* 5+ years Experience in echo, preferably in a tertiary care setting (Required)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
* Basic computer skills; (Required proficiency)
* Good communication skills; (Required proficiency)
* Extensive knowledge of cardiac pathology; (Required proficiency)
* Extensive knowledge of the fundamentals of echocardiography; (Required proficiency)
* Demonstrates competence and a strong knowledge in the use of all types of echocardiography equipment. Troubleshoots and operates such equipment properly. (Required proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications
* Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) (Required Upon Hire) or
* Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) (Required Upon Hire) or
* Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS) (Preferred Upon Hire)
* Basic Life Support (BLS) (Required Upon Hire)
