Its purpose is to support brand development, advance design excellence, and set new standards for modern fiber‑based packaging.Metsä Board is looking for a**STRUCTURAL PACKAGING DESIGNER**to create validated, production‑ready fiber‑based structures that maximize material efficiency and recyclability while elevating the end‑user experience. Working closely with graphical design, technical service and sustainability teams, you’ll transform insight into functional solutions that support circularity and long‑term customer partnerships.The position is located at Metsä Board's design studio, Milan, ItalyAs a Structural Packaging Designer, you will play a key role in creating high‑performing, sustainable, and manufacturable fiber‑based packaging solutions for our global customers. Your scope will include:* Designing innovative structural concepts using folding boxboard, food service board and corrugated materials, transforming customer challenges into functional and responsible solutions.* Creating accurate 2D and 3D designs, prototypes and samples to support testing, validation and customer decision‑making.* Collaborating closely with Graphical Packaging Designers to ensure structural and visual elements work seamlessly together in every project.* Working integrally with sustainability experts, technical service teams, competence centres and mill specialists to build future‑proof packaging solutions that support circularity.* Optimizing material efficiency and recyclability by applying deep understanding of fiber behaviour, board grades, strength properties and converting requirements.* Evaluating performance requirements such as durability, stackability, protection and logistics optimization to ensure designs meet customer expectations and regulatory standards.* Supporting testing and validation, including compression, drop tests, climate conditioning and production line trials, and refining designs based on results.* Producing clear and accurate CAD drawings, dielines and manufacturing specifications, while maintaining systematic documentation and version control.* Participating in customer workshops and development projects to co‑create solutions and strengthen long‑term partnerships.* Managing design tasks with discipline and transparency, communicating proactively with internal teams, suppliers and customers.* A solid educational background in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, providing the technical foundation needed for high‑quality structural work.* Practical experience in structural packaging design, ideally with fiber‑based materials or premium consumer packaging, enabling you to translate customer needs into functional solutions.* Strong CAD skills (such as ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks, Cape/TOPS or equivalent) and confidence in creating accurate 2D/3D structures, prototypes, and production‑ready dielines.* Deep understanding of fiber behaviour, converting processes, board performance and tooling, ensuring your designs are manufacturable, efficient and aligned with circularity principles.* Ability to collaborate seamlessly with multidisciplinary teams — graphical designers, sustainability specialists, technical service experts, competence centres and mill specialists.* Analytical thinking and a hands‑on approach, enabling you to interpret performance tests, refine designs, and support continuous improvement.* Clear and effective communication skills, both visual and verbal, essential for customer workshops, internal teamwork and presenting design rationale.* Commitment to sustainability‑driven design, ensuring all solutions support recyclability, material efficiency and Metsä Board’s circular design principles.* Excellent command of English, both written and spoken; Italian language skills are a valuable advantage for customer interaction and local collaboration.You are passionate about creating smart, sustainable and high‑performing structural solutions.
