Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large-scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Architecture, or equivalent in construction / design management. The candidate must have excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills. Proficiency in commercial and industrial architecture and engineering with a primary focus on datacenter design. Ability to work with technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment with an even temperament. Integrity, methodical approach, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic. Experience leading teams of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes related to large datacenter environments. Contract negotiation skills with a solid understanding of value-added ideas without compromising safety and quality. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment; resilient and forward-looking. Knowledge of local building codes, regulations, and jurisdictional standards. Proficiency in MS Office packages for preparing and presenting reports. Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally. Experience as a lead engineer, lead architect, design manager, or project manager. Large-scale project experience (e.g., $100M per project), delivering Design Build and Design Bid Build projects. Experience in technical site due diligence programs. Proven track record in data center/mission-critical projects. Preferred Qualifications Chartered / Professional Engineer / Project Manager or Registered Architect. Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and government security screening requirements is mandatory. This includes passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. Responsibilities Specific Job Tasks Reporting to the Southern EMEA Programme Design Manager, the Design Manager will oversee engineering scope, schedule, and budget for greenfield, brownfield, and retrofit projects across West Central and South Africa EMEA. Responsibilities include managing resources for technical due diligence, construction permitting, and engineering/design of building shell/core, power, cooling, telecom, and controls infrastructure aligned with Microsoft IT capacity roadmap. Roles and Responsibilities Provide design management, technical direction, decision-making, and leadership for datacenter architectural and engineering designs. Manage delivery of multiple concurrent datacenter design solutions, ensuring alignment with project scope, schedule, and budget, and oversee design deliverables from MS consultants. Engage with internal Microsoft stakeholders and external vendors specializing in datacenter architecture and engineering.
