Overview

This recruitment is carried out anonymously.

Metsä Board is establishing a new Packaging Design Studio in Milan’s Via Tortona district, creating a collaborative environment for designers and packaging specialists to develop future‑driven packaging solutions. The studio will bring together structural and graphical designers, material experts, and technical specialists to explore new ideas, test concepts, and accelerate innovation. Combining Metsä Board’s strong expertise in premium paperboard and sustainable packaging with Milan’s design culture, the studio will enable professionals to create functional, visually refined, and high‑performance packaging concepts. Its purpose is to support brand development, advance design excellence, and set new standards for modern fibre‑based packaging.

Metsä Board is looking for a GRAPHICAL PACKAGING DESIGNER to create visually compelling, brand‑enhancing packaging concepts that integrate seamlessly with structural design and deliver an exceptional end‑user experience. Working closely with structural designers, technical service and sustainability teams, you’ll turn brand insights and customer requirements into impactful packaging that supports circularity, premium appearance, and material efficiency.

The position is located at Metsä Board’s design studio, Milan, Italy.

What will you get to do?

* As a Graphical Packaging Designer, you will play a key role in shaping the visual identity and brand expression of fiber‑based packaging solutions for our global customers. Your scope will include:
* Designing high‑quality graphical concepts, ensuring brand consistency while adapting visuals to various board grades, converting requirements, and market needs.
* Collaborating closely with Structural Packaging Designers to ensure graphics and structure work together seamlessly from concept to final production.
* Creating precise artwork files, mock‑ups, and print‑ready materials, ensuring accuracy in color, typography, layout and finishing details.
* Working integrally with technical service, sustainability experts and competence centres to ensure your designs meet performance, recyclability, and printing process requirements.
* Translating brand and marketing insights into packaging that enhances shelf impact, supports premium perception, and communicates sustainability attributes clearly.
* Participating in customer workshops and co‑creation sessions, contributing creative insights and supporting long‑term customer partnerships.
* Supporting print trials and color validations, refining artwork based on technical feedback and real‑world production performance.
* Ensuring compliance with print specifications, regulatory requirements and brand guidelines, maintaining disciplined version control and documentation.
* Managing multiple design tasks simultaneously, communicating proactively with internal teams, suppliers and customers to ensure smooth project execution.
* Exploring new design trends, tools and visual approaches, contributing to Metsä Board’s continuous development in premium and sustainable packaging design.

What are we expecting of you?

* A solid educational background in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Packaging Design or a related field, providing the creative and technical foundation for high‑quality graphical work.
* Practical experience in graphical packaging design, ideally in FMCG, luxury, consumer goods or fiber‑based packaging, enabling you to turn customer briefs into compelling visual solutions.
* Strong skills in Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and confidence in creating print‑ready files that align with converting and printing processes.
* Understanding of printing technologies such as offset, flexo or digital printing, along with finishing techniques including embossing, foiling, varnishes and special effects.
* Ability to collaborate smoothly with structural designers, technical teams, sustainability experts and mill specialists to ensure a fully aligned packaging solution.
* A strong eye for detail, color accuracy, typography and brand consistency — essential for delivering premium‑quality visual outcomes.
* Analytical and solution‑oriented mindset, allowing you to adapt designs according to technical constraints, material behavior, and sustainability requirements.
* Clear communication skills, enabling you to explain design rationale and collaborate in customer meetings and cross‑functional teams.
* Excellent command of English, both written and spoken; Italian language skills are a valuable advantage for customer interaction and local collaboration.

You are passionate about crafting beautiful, purposeful and sustainable visual packaging solutions. You enjoy working where creativity meets material science, and where brand expression must align with real‑world production. You thrive in a collaborative environment and take pride in designs that look outstanding on the shelf and perform flawlessly in production. A structured way of working, curiosity and a positive mindset will help you succeed in this dynamic, multidisciplinary role.
