APPLICATION CLOSING DATE: August 9th, 2025
Human Technopole (HT) is an interdisciplinary life science research institute, created and supported by the Italian Government, with the aim of developing innovative strategies to improve human health. HT is composed of five Centers: Neurogenomics, Computational Biology, Structural Biology, Genomics, and Health Data Science. The Centers work together to enable interdisciplinary research and to create an open, collaborative environment that will help promote life science research both nationally and internationally.
About the Group
The Taverna group studies brain development and evolution, focusing on the role of intracellular traffic and protein glycosylation in neural stem cells.
Internship Project Description
We study how traffic and glycosylation affect neural stem cell behavior and brain development by merging basic cell biology and robotics for single cell manipulation in tissue. To understand how traffic and glycosylation affect brain development, we leverage the genetics of Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation (CDGs), a group of rare diseases where alterations in the secretory pathway is associated with derailed neurodevelopment and subsequent neurological manifestations. In this internship’s project the candidate will model the neurodevelopmental aspects of CDGs with a specific focus on neuronal stem cells’ cell biology and proliferation/differentiation balance.
Key tasks and activities
Modelling neurodevelopmental aspects and neurological manifestations of CDGs using human iPSCs-derived organoids. This task includes cell culture, iPSCs maintenance, organoid culture and cell multi-modal cell phenotyping.
Essential requirements
A Master's Degree in Biology (or relevant topic for this project);
Experience with cell culture work;
Background in neurobiology;
Experience with immunofluorescence and light microscopy;
Fluency in English - HT is an international research institute.
Preferred requirements
Experience with 2D or 3D iPSCs-derived systems to model human disorders
A background in cell biology and/or molecular biology
Organizational and social skills
Excellent communication and team working skills;
Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment and to work independently;
Ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
