Applied Scientist II, Amzn Shipping-Prd & Tech
Our customers trust us to deliver packages on time and as expected. Amazon Shipping builds a well‑planned, cost‑optimal network that scales to handle millions of package movements a day. The network monitors for failures before they happen—predicting congestion and operations breakdown— and takes proactive corrective actions. When failures do happen, built‑in redundancies mitigate impact and avoid reliance on single points of failure. The result is a network that delivers customer value efficiently.
As an Applied Scientist in Amazon Shipping, you will work on multiple challenging machine learning problems spread across a wide spectrum of business problems. You will build ML models that audit off‑manifest shipment cost discrepancies, improve the quality of financial and planning data by accurately predicting ship cost at the package level, forecast packages required to pick from shipper warehouses to reduce First Mile shipping cost, and predict delivery delay for every package using signals from the transportation network and external weather signals. Your models will help improve buyer experience by triggering early corrective actions and generating proactive customer notifications.
You will demonstrate Amazon Leadership Principles—Think Big, Invent, and Simplify—by translating transportation domain business problems into machine learning problems. You will employ supervised, unsupervised, semi‑supervised, and reinforcement learning paradigms, choosing linear/logistic models, tree‑based models, deep learning, ensemble models, and Q‑learning as appropriate. You will use LIME and SHAP to make models interpretable, and you will create reusable modeling solutions that scale across regions and package movement types. You will partner with Applied Scientists and Research Scientists from other teams in the US and India, and your solutions will be production‑quality and directly used in production services.
You will mentor and consult with Applied Scientists and Software Development Engineers, contribute to the Amazon ML community through scientific papers and conference participation, and collaborate with a diverse data science, engineering, and business intelligence team.
