Overview
Construction Project Manager, EMEA Construction – Data Center, Zaragoza and/or Huesca, Spain. This role is part of AWS Infrastructure Services and is responsible for the oversight and review of all disciplines related to data center construction, including civil, structural, architectural, electrical, mechanical, controls and commissioning. The Construction Manager administers construction and lease contracts to ensure full compliance including commercial elements for a specific data centre site. The Data Center Construction team owns the construction life cycle from constructability and proposal development through bid analysis, award, and onsite construction management. The manager will lead with deep construction management expertise, inspire the team, and support delivery of efficient electrical and mechanical systems for customers.
Responsibilities
- Construction project management and oversight of construction related activities as they relate to new builds or general capital projects at a specific data centre site. This includes ownership of the project scope, timeline, and budget.
- Direct interface with construction general contractors during bidding, award, execution, and project closeout/punch list phases.
- Work with general contractors and vendors to deliver efficient and high-quality project turn-overs.
- Lead negotiations with general contractors and evaluate bids/proposals with detail and accuracy.
- Creation of construction project scope and request for proposals.
- Capital requests/financial analysis of construction work including change orders, purchase orders, and invoicing.
- Construction project management for specific initiatives aimed at increasing the resiliency of data centres.
- Reviews of electrical and mechanical designs associated with the construction of new data centres or the optimisation of existing data centres.
- Construction submittal review.
- Construction project quality control including the creation of a commissioning plan and support of the commissioning process.
- Recording and reporting key construction metrics to team members and management.
- Be a leader within the group as well as within internal and external teams that support the data centre.
- Note: The position will be based on a data centre construction site in Zaragoza and/or Huesca/Spain.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management or an equivalent engineering science OR 4+ years of related construction management experience in lieu of a degree.
- 5+ years of general contractor and vendor experience (request for proposals, bidding, change orders, quality control, RFI/submittal tracking) associated with construction and project execution.
- 5+ years of experience directly constructing electrical engineering systems including large scale power distribution/generation gear and constructing mechanical engineering systems including cooling systems.
- 2+ years experience in construction of mission critical facilities directly related to the design or construction of data centers including large scale technical operations or large-scale compute farms.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understand electrical engineering best practices including breaker coordination studies, switch gear sequence of operation, and NEC code including mechanical engineering principles for cooling systems.
- Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, BOCA, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
- Ability to define data center system-level architecture, specify/document performance and equipment requirements, create/communicate conceptual designs, and create/maintain project documentation, with experience of large scale power systems.
- Ability and willingness to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs and duration with no impact on quality and reliability.
- Perform business case analysis to justify project scope and financial position for management review.
