Position Summary
We are currently searching for a Satellite and Ground Segment Engineer to join our international team in Rome. This is a full‐time permanent position with a hybrid working style and excellent opportunities for career progress. The role is part of the Serco Copernicus Services unit responsible for supporting all Copernicus Sentinel missions in operating, maintenance and coordination services.

Mission – Copernicus Space Component Ground Segment Engineer
As the Ground Segment Engineer, you will orchestrate operations across the services supporting Copernicus Space Component activities. Key responsibilities include:
Monitoring overall operational performance of the ground segment, ensuring services operate expectedly across all stages of the data flow.
Performing end‐to‐end monitoring, analysis and reporting to ensure CSC services meet expected outcomes.
Overseeing data flow for completeness and timeliness—data acquisition, production, dissemination and archival.
Identifying, analysing and reporting deviations from expected performance.
Coordinating and supporting operations across the CSC ecosystem, including planning, tracking and managing tasks and activities.
Managing interfaces among different CSC operational services to ensure clear communication and effective coordination.
Maintaining operations documentation, supporting configuration management activities and updating website content related to Sentinel missions.
Managing action trackers and handling requests via the Copernicus End Users Helpdesk.
Processing and managing anomaly and maintenance reports, coordinating with involved entities and following up until resolution.
Using ticketing systems to track and manage incidents and maintenance activities.
Acting as the primary point of contact for the client, ensuring alignment between client expectations and delivered services.
Supporting the development team in monitoring and reporting requirements, including operational dashboards.
Preparing regular reports—weekly and quarterly summaries of operational performance and activities.
Attending and organising key meetings (progress meetings, Anomaly Review Boards, coordination boards) for alignment with operational decisions.
Participating in on‐call rotations during Extended Working Hours to ensure continuity and reliability of CSC operations.
Qualifications
What you bring to the mission includes:
Expertise in performance monitoring and reporting, tracking, analysing and reporting mission performance trends to ensure data completeness, timeliness and accuracy across complex systems.
Strong problem‐solving and analytical skills to interpret complex mission data and respond effectively.
Experience coordinating operations involving multiple services, stakeholders, planning, scheduling and tracking operational tasks across distributed teams.
Organisational and leadership skills for managing complex workflows and enabling seamless collaboration.
Hands‐on experience with Atlassian tools: Jira for action management, issue and anomaly tracking, Confluence for documentation and knowledge sharing.
Ability to produce technical documentation—operational procedures, anomaly reports, progress reports.
Effective communication in English at B2 (Upper‐Intermediate) level, both written and spoken.
Knowledge of Copernicus Sentinel missions and the ground segment end‐to‐end data flow.
Relevant educational background—Bachelor's or Master's in Aerospace Engineering, IT, Computer Science or related field.
Hands‐on experience with monitoring tools such as Grafana, dashboards, advanced features for performance monitoring.
Experience with OData, STAC APIs, SQL databases.
Experience in aerospace projects, ideally involving Earth Observation systems or satellite missions.
Agile and ITIL familiarity for service management and project execution.
