Job Overview
AWS is set to introduce the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) and is seeking experienced systems engineers to lead operations and development for high‑availability AWS services—including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock—exclusively for EU customers.
Responsibilities
* Oversee the launch of the ESC in 2025, working closely with global AWS teams and influencing AWS services and technology evolution.
* Collaborate with technology leaders to enhance day‑to‑day operations and improve availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC.
* Operate and improve core software systems, review service health, investigate anomalies, write actionable bug reports, and plan and execute changes under a change‑management process.
* Resolve incident bugs, manage the operational backlog, and automate root‑cause analysis through scripting.
* Participate in on‑call rotations to resolve out‑of‑hours incidents.
A Day in the Life
Spend most of the week monitoring service health, investigating anomalies, writing actionable bug reports, planning and executing production changes, resolving operational issues, and automating root‑cause diagnostics.
Eligibility
* Fluent in written and spoken English.
* National of an EU member state and residing in the EU to operate the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
* Relocation support within the European Union is available for successful applicants.
* Participation in an on‑call rota.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related IT discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
* Experience in scripting (Bash, Python, or Ruby) or software development (Java, TypeScript, or similar), coupled with Linux and networking fundamentals.
Preferred Qualifications
* Execution of standard operating procedures and operational best practices.
* Experience operating services in AWS or other cloud systems.
* Experience with 24x7 high‑availability distributed applications, performance tuning, fleet optimization, and monitoring tools (e.g., CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, Elastic).
* Experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar).
