We are seeking a motivated and skilled First Level Support Technician to provide day-to-day technical support for CMRE's Communication and Information Systems (CIS) both ashore and at sea (including on board research vessels). The successful candidate will deliver high-quality, user-focused IT support in a dynamic international environment that combines scientific research, military, and civilian elements.
Key Responsibilities
Execute day-to-day first-level support of CMRE Communication and Information Systems (CIS) ashore and at sea.
Install, remove, and configure hardware and/or software, including associated connections, following supplied instructions and tools.
Perform system tests, diagnose and correct malfunctions, and document results according to agreed procedures.
Assist with the evaluation of change requests and contribute to investigations of hardware/software installation issues.
Administer, track, log, report, and correct configuration items, components, and changes using established tools and processes.
Conduct configuration audits and perform corrective actions as directed.
Provide 1st line system administration support at the Centre and to deployed installations (e.g., research vessels), in coordination with 2nd line system and network administrators.
Assist users in incident resolution and perform systems maintenance under 2nd line supervision.
Proactively monitor assigned systems, alert 2nd line support in case of performance degradation or outages, and generate availability reports and statistics.
Advise management on corrective or procurement actions needed to address system weaknesses.
Stay current with IT technologies and trends from an end-user perspective to deliver state-of-the-art support to a scientific workforce.
Requirements
Mandatory
Vocational training or higher technical qualification in an IT-related discipline.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Experience with IT Service Management platforms (e.g., ticketing systems).
Solid working knowledge and hands‐on experience with Microsoft Windows and Linux (Red Hat and Ubuntu).
Detailed knowledge of TCP/IP networking, directory services (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP).
Practical experience with virtualization technologies, particularly VMware.
Working experience with Active Directory and Centrify.
Good knowledge and hands‐on experience with data storage systems.
Demonstrated ability to work in a fast‐paced, dynamic environment with agility and timeliness.
Proven ability to support deployed operations (e.g., at sea) with limited connectivity, while strictly following procedures and maintaining system security.
Strong service‐oriented attitude with genuine interest in working directly with end users.
Desirable
Experience implementing security controls and frameworks (NCIRC, NCSC, NIST, etc.).
Experience with VMware, Cisco Networking, or EMC SAN storage.
Familiarity with deployment automation tools.
Prior experience in an international environment involving both military and civilian personnel.
Advanced experience in networking and server maintenance (Linux and Windows).
In-depth knowledge of VMware ESX/vSphere virtualization platform.
Experience supporting computing facilities on maritime platforms.
Advanced knowledge of network technologies.
Good knowledge of ITIL best practices.
Additional Information
The position requires on‐site work at CMRE in La Spezia, Italy.
Candidates must be eligible for and able to obtain and maintain a NATO Security Clearance.
Occasional deployments on research vessels may be required.
