ABOUT OUR DISTRICT\n\nThe Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and\ntransformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school\nwith the skills needed to be ready for college and career. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the\nSuperintendent with improving student achievement, and she is seeking a\ndedicated and diverse team of educators to partner with her in moving the\ndistrict toward its goals.\n\nThe Syracuse City School District represents 35 schools and programs, including\n6 high schools, 6 middle schools, 6 K-8 schools, 13 elementary schools, and 4\nalternative education programs, serving approximately 19,000 students Pre-K–12.\nOf these students, 82.3% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 20.1% are\nserved by the Office of Special Education, and 83% are students of color. \n\nREPORTS TO: School Principal and Supervisor of Guidance and Counseling\n\nWHO WE WANT:\n\nSuccessful SCSD educators are passionately committed to urban education and all\nin for Syracuse students. They:\n\n * Believe strongly that all students can learn at high levels;\n * Demonstrate commitment to serving urban students, schools or communities, and\n to closing the achievement gap;\n * Demonstrate willingness to put the interests of students above all others;\n * Actively contribute to a culture of high expectations in their school and\n district;\n * Adapt seamlessly to the complexities of the urban school environment; and\n * Follow current trends in education policy and research, including Common Core\n standards, comprehensive assessment systems and data-driven instruction.\n\n \n\nJOB DESCRIPTION:\n\nSchool counselors are professional educators with a mental health perspective\nwho understand and respond to the challenges presented by today's diverse\nstudent population. School counselors do not work in isolation; rather they are\nintegral to the total educational program. They provide proactive leadership\nthat engages all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help\nstudents achieve success in school. School counselors align with the school's\nmission to support the academic achievement of all students as they prepare for\nthe ever-changing world of the 21st century. This mission is accomplished\nthrough the design, development, implementation and evaluation of a\ncomprehensive, developmental and systematic school counseling program. The ASCA\nNational Standards in the academic, career, and personal/social domains are the\nfoundation of their work. \n\nPURPOSE: To help all students develop skills in the areas of personal/social\ngrowth, educational planning, and college and career opportunities.\n\nDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The School Counselor will be expected to fulfill\nthe following responsibilities:\n\nSchool/District Guidance Curriculum\n\n * The school counselor establishes the school counseling program and develops\n activities and resources to implement and evaluate the program.\n * Academic skills support\n * Organizational, study and test-taking skills\n * Education in understanding self and others\n * Coping strategies\n * Peer relationships and effective social skills\n * Communication, problem-solving, decision-making and conflict resolution\n * Career awareness, exploration and planning\n * Substance abuse education\n * Multicultural/diversity awareness\n\n \n\nIndividual Student Planning\n\n * Goal-setting/decision-making: The school counselor accurately interprets test\n results and other student data. The counselor also assists teachers with the\n educational placement of students by using appropriate educational assessment\n strategies.\n * Academic planning.\n * Develop, review, and revise a career and educational plan for each student.\n * Monitor and advise students and parents as to progress toward promotion and\n graduation.\n * Prepare students for transition to next level (middle to high school, high\n school to post high school).\n * Postsecondary planning.\n * Education in understanding of self, including strengths and weaknesses.\n * Transition planning.\n\n \n\nResponsive Services\n\n * Individual and small group counseling:\n * The school counselor provides individual and group counseling services to\n meet the developmental, preventive, and remedial needs of students\n * The school counselor consults with students, parents, teachers, and other\n school and community personnel to assist in meeting the needs of students.\n * Make appropriate referrals of students and parents to outside agencies and\n specialists when necessary.\n * Individual/family/school crisis intervention\n * Peer facilitation\n * Consultation/collaboration:\n * Referrals to community agencies:\n\n \n\nSystem Support\n\n * Professional Practices and Development: The school counselor adheres to\n ethical standards of the counseling profession, and abides by the laws,\n policies, and procedures that govern the schools.
