Ready to accelerate plastic recycling by becoming part of a fast-growing climate technology company? We are currently looking for a talented Junior Process Engineer and a Medior Process Engineer with expertise in designing/operating chemical plants to join our innovative team. A background in chemical engineering (experience with Pyrolysis is a plus), along with experience in plant operation or commissioning, would be highly beneficial.
BlueAlp – accelerating plastic recycling
Over the years, the discovery of plastic has added great value to the world. However, only 9% of plastic waste is recycled, the rest is burned or goes to landfill. BlueAlp focuses on recycling these plastics into high value products with our proven technology.
We do this via our three business models:
* Developing and licensing our advanced pyrolysis technology to partners
* Engineering and building our modular plants with our experienced engineering team in Eindhoven in our own fabrication yard.
* Own & operate pyrolysis plants in the Benelux
BlueAlp’s technology development started in Switzerland in the Alp’s with our first demo plant of 3kt per annum. This is where we defined our technology philosophy of a continuous and scalable process. The next milestone was scaling this plant up to 21kt per annum, we have engineered and build this plant in Eindhoven and build it up to Oostende (Belgium).
Position in the organization
As a Process Engineer, you will play a key role in the design, implementation, and operational support of BlueAlp’s Plastic-to-Chemical (PTC) technology. The role bridges process engineering design with practical plant operation, ensuring that engineering solutions are robust, operable, and aligned with real plant conditions. You will contribute to process development from conceptual design through commissioning and operation, working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and site personnel.
A strong operational mindset and hands-on plant experience are essential, as the role requires extended on-site assignments (typically 6 months or longer) to support commissioning, troubleshooting, and operational optimization. Given the expected collaboration with Italian partners and project sites, professional proficiency in Italian and English is required.
Job expectation
Given the nature of BlueAlp’s technology deployment, this role may require extended presence at partner facilities or project sites outside of the Netherlands, particularly during commissioning and operational ramp-up phases. Assignments can range from several weeks to 6 months or longer, depending on project needs.
As BlueAlp’s Process Engineer you:
* Work in a dynamic environment within the Process Engineering department, with experienced colleagues.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including process, project, mechanical, electrical, and control engineers, to ensure integrated plant design.
* Work closely with operations teams, contractors, and site personnel to ensure safe and reliable plant operation.
* Provide training to personnel involved in day-to-day operation
* Conduct process simulations, equipment sizing, and material and energy balance calculations for process installations, including distillation systems, reactors, heat exchangers, and associated equipment.
* Generate and review process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), equipment specifications, and technical documentation such as process descriptions, process control documentation, and instruction manuals.
* Carry out project-related engineering activities and deliverables in consultation with the project team, including performing risk analysis in the design phase and analyzing, interpreting, and monitoring the quality of the project information provided during the project including management of change (MOC).
* Evaluate and select process equipment and vendors to meet the design & project requirements.
* Solve specific technical problems during the execution of projects, in collaboration with the Team Leader.
* Conduct reliability studies to identify components in the process that contribute to downtime or act as bottlenecks during normal operations. Perform process optimization studies and identify areas for improving plant performance and reducing operational costs.
* Assist in process safety evaluations, including HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) studies, risk assessments, and environmental impact reviews.
* Participate in international assignments, including extended on-site deployment (up to 6 months or longer) during commissioning, operational support, performance testing or troubleshooting phases. This includes providing technical support during the activities & resolving any design-related issues.
* Translate operational feedback from plant operations into design improvements and process optimization.
* Support operational teams in diagnosing process deviations and implementing corrective actions.
* Analyze and advise on field data from the PTC installations in line with data analysis for validation modeling, diagnosing problems, and recommending process improvements.
Knowledge level
* Bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemical engineering, Process Engineering or related discipline
* Relevant experience in process engineering within chemical, petrochemical, waste-to-energy, or similar industrial environments
* Demonstrated experience in both process design and plant operations, commissioning, or start-up
* Strong understanding of industrial plant operation and troubleshooting
* Experience with pyrolysis, waste-to-chemicals, or thermal conversion technologies is highly desirable
* Proficiency with process simulation tools (Aspen HYSYS, PRO/II, HTRI or similar)
* Experience with process safety assessments, including HAZOP and risk analysis
* Willingness to participate in extended on-site assignments (typically 6 months or longer) during project execution or commissioning phases
* Professional proficiency in Italian and English (spoken and written)
* Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
* Ability to work both independently and within multidisciplinary project teams
* Excellent teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
* Familiarity of regulations and standards related to chemical plant operation.
* You are a team player who is proactive, independent and curious.
What do we offer?
* A challenging role within a fast-growing climate technology scale up
* Strong opportunities for personal and professional development
* The freedom to shape your role and contribute to BlueAlp’s growth
* An attractive and competitive salary package
* 27 vacation days and 13 ADV days (based on a 40-hour work week)
* 8% holiday allowance
* Travel allowance
* Solid pension scheme (PME)
* A dynamic, informal, international and inclusive working environment that values ownership and responsibility
