Position Summary
The Senior PCBa Layout Design Engineer is responsible for leading the design, layout, and release of multi-layer printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in advanced medical and neurophysiological systems. This role owns the end-to-end PCB layout process; from schematic import and component placement through manufacturing documentation; ensuring high-performance, manufacturable, and compliant designs that meet project cost, timing and performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead PCBA layout design for complex, mixed-signal boards (analog, digital, power) primarily in Altium Designer.
- Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, firmware, manufacturing, and test engineering teams to ensure component placement, stack-up, and routing meet performance, safety, reliability, and manufacturing targets.
- Perform design rule checks (DRC); including trace, clearance, vias, component placements, power & ground plane, high-speed & RF signals, solder mask, polarity markings, silkscreen best practices.
- Lead layout design reviews.
- Generate and maintain fabrication and assembly data packages, including BOM, Gerbers, ODB++ files, pick and place centroid files, IPC netlist, and assembly specifications.
- PCBA product life cycle management (Manage engineering change orders (Submission, Review, Approval, Release).
- Apply Design for Manufacturability (DfM), EOL, Assembly (DfA), and Test (DfT) principles in every layout iteration; interface with contract manufacturers and PCB fabricators to resolve issues throughout the development process.
- Support hardware and firmware engineering during prototype and validation builds, ensuring layout changes are controlled and documented through the engineering change process.
- Ensure regulatory and quality compliance with medical-device standards: IEC 60601-1 (Safety), IEC 60601-1-2 (EMC), IPC-6012, IPC-A-610 Class 3, RoHS, REACH.
- Drive continuous improvement in eCAD library management, stack-up templates, footprints / symbol standards and release discipline.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Electronics, or related field.
- 7+ years of professional experience in rigid, flex, and rigid-flex, PCB design and layout using Altium Designer (MUST HAVE). PADS/Mentor, and Cadence a plus.
- Experience designing for low-noise analog front ends (E.g. EEG, EMG, ECG, or similar bio-signal acquisition).
- Experience designing with high-speed interfaces (e.g., USB HS, LVDS, SPI, FMC).
- Experience with high-density interconnect (HDI) routing strategies
- Familiar with impedance control, power-distribution design, EMC/EMI mitigation, grounding, shielding, stackup design, and isolation strategies.
- Experience working in regulated or high-reliability industries (medical, aerospace, automotive, defense).
- Experience creating high-quality, manufacturable footprints, and managing and maintaining cloud-based and database components
- Strong understanding of PCB fabrication processes, materials, and design constraints.
- Exposure to automated test and ICT/FCT fixture design considerations.
- Proficiency in 3D MCAD integration (SolidWorks with MCAD CoDesigner, or STEP-based ECAD-MCAD workflows).
- Experience with Process Lifecycle Management systems such as Agile PLM.
Core Competencies
- Layout ownership and accountability.
- Cross-functional collaboration with (electrical, mechanical, firmware) engineering teams, supply chain, operations, project management, external vendors. Drive action-driven results.
- Detail-oriented with strong documentation discipline
- Continuous improvement mindset
- Mentorship and technical leadership
