The Institute of Mountain Emergency Medicine focuses on research, innovation and training in acute care and emergency medicine in mountain and extreme environments, working in close collaboration with healthcare systems, rescue organizations and international partners.
The Role
The Institute of Mountain Emergency Medicine is seeking a motivated Junior Researcher to join the project “Apprendimento immersivo per il soccorso ALPIno con NEuroscienze e tecnologie di eXtended Reality – Alpine XR” (CUP D53C25003580007) project ID 0300292, funded by the Interreg Italia–Svizzera Programme 2021-2027.
The project aims to develop, implement and evaluate immersive learning approaches (Extended Reality – XR) for alpine search and rescue and emergency medical training, integrating neuroscience, simulation-based education and innovative digital technologies.
The successful candidate will contribute to applied research activities and training initiatives at the interface of mountain emergency medicine, healthcare education and immersive technologies.
Tasks & Key Responsibilities
* Support the development, testing, and optimisation of XR-based training scenarios, integrating clinical content with realistic environmental and operational stressors.
* Participate in planning and conducting experimental studies and simulations in laboratory, controlled extreme, and alpine field environments, including preparation of study protocols, ethics submissions, and all technical and regulatory documentation for experimental XR research.
* Collect, process, and analyse physiological, behavioural, and performance data to evaluate training effectiveness, usability, and learning outcomes.
* Manage research datasets and databases.
* Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary partners, including clinicians, engineers, technical developers, and rescue organisations, and liaise with local healthcare services and emergency medical systems.
* Contribute to the interpretation of findings and the dissemination of results through scientific publications, conference presentations, and project reports.
Requirements
* Education: Master’s degree in Nursing Sciences or Health Sciences, preferably complemented by a Master’s degree in Critical Care.
* Professional Experience: Proven experience within the local healthcare system, preferably in South Tyrol.
* Clinical Background: Solid experience in intra- and extra-hospital emergency and urgent care settings.
* Training Experience: Extensive experience in simulation-based and instructor-led training for healthcare professionals in emergency and urgent care, including life support, trauma, paediatric and critical care education. Proven ability in planning, delivering and evaluating structured training programmes in both intra- and extra-hospital settings, with formal qualification and/or experience as an instructor or course director in recognised emergency medicine training programmes and completion of advanced instructor or train-the-trainer courses in simulation-based education.
* Interest in extended reality (XR), immersive learning or innovative training technologies.
* Strong organisational, communication and teamwork skills.
* Motivation and flexibility to work in an interdisciplinary research environment.
* Willingness to work in Bolzano/Bozen.
Language Skills
* German and Italian (mother tongue or equivalent proficiency).
* English: Very good spoken and written proficiency, including academic English for healthcare research.
