PpbPOSITION: /b Waste Management Specialist /p pbSEASON: /b Austral Winter (March 2026 - Oct 2026) /p pbLOCATION: /b Palmer Station, Antarctica /p pbSECTOR/DEPT: /b Six Mile, LLC Antarctica /p h3ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: /h3 ul liAct as point of contact for Waste Management and attend weekly staff meetings and weekly teleconferences. /li liCollect and package for shipment all solid and hazardous wastes on station. /li liFollow all SOPs associated with position duties. /li liEnsure proper documentation and filing of all paperwork on time. /li liReview/update JHA and SDS binders and computer folders. /li liUsing the proper PPE for various tasks (correct gloves, respirator, safety glasses, etc.). /li liQuality checks all shipping containers and correct discrepancies immediately. /li liProcess hazardous and radioactive waste per SOPs. This includes marking, labeling, weighing, and storing the drums or items into a shipping container. /li liPerform certain classification qualitative testing on items (pH testing, flash point testing, etc.). /li liConsolidate and lab pack wastes as required per profile and classification. /li liSafely operate various pieces of equipment on station (Skytrax, ATVs, etc.). /li liStore processed hazardous wastes according to segregation requirements. /li liKeep waste inventory records updated and accurate. /li liPerform quality‑assurance checks on inventory database and files. /li liProvide hazardous waste, solid waste and spill briefings. /li liAct as Spill Team Lead for entire station, write spill reports, and conduct trainings and drills. /li liOrganize, orient, and train members of Spill Team for outside spill response. Coordinate with staff of the visiting vessels as applicable. /li liMaintain inventory of spill supplies in the two spill‑vans and satellite spill kits. /li liAssist station mechanic with weekly station fueling activities. /li liMaintain / deploy spill‑boom supplies for station fueling. /li liAssist with general station needs, including snow removal, radio communications on assigned day, mini‑GASH, GASH, and House Mouse activities. /li liConduct community Waste Briefs or other informational sessions if necessary. /li liCollect and process Resale Items as needed. /li liMaintain Maximo Resale work orders and provide end of season Maximo report to McMurdo Resale Admin and ASC Property Manager. /li liMaintain a flexible schedule based on Vessel Operations, unusual hours, and other station‑wide activities. /li liEnsure seasonal replacement receives proper training and maintain a log of this information. /li liTroubleshoot any issues that arise and elevate them as needed. /li liSupply manual labor (shoveling) for several hours if needed. /li liPerform regular use of drum dollies, cargo straps, banding, shovels, pallet jacks, power tools and other tools. /li liPerform regular physical activity, including bending, consistently lifting and carrying, reaching and gripping. /li liDisplay self‑motivation in physically challenging and atypical work environment; position is comprised of approximately 70% outdoor tasking. /li liMaintain flexibility and positive attitude in a dynamic, fast‑paced work setting. /li liPerform duties in support of Operations Division metrics (as provided by supervisor). /li liSupport the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly, effected by this position's work activities. /li liComply with all ASC Environmental Health Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation. /li liWork to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments. /li liResponsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace. /li liPerform other duties as required. /li /ul pReports to Hazardous Waste Manager and Solid Waste Manager. /p h3REQUIREMENTS: /h3 ul li2 years (or Antarctic seasons) of USAP Waste Management experience. /li liCollege degree (2 additional years of experience will substitute). /li liStrong computer software experience. /li liAble to lift 50 pounds consistently and wear a respirator. /li liValid Driver's License and Passport valid for six months after contract end. /li liPhysically able to be active for 9 hours daily. /li liMust be able to lift the safety regulation maximum. /li liMust pass physical qualification assessment. /li liAble to deploy to Antarctica for length of contract. /li /ul h3PREFERRED: /h3 ul li1 year of Hazardous Materials shipping/characterization or reporting experience, or 2 years of Environmental remediation. /li li1 year of supervisory experience. /li li1 year of High School Chemistry or equivalent. /li li1 quarter of college General Chemistry. /li liCollege degree in Chemistry or Environmental Science. /li liOSHA HazWOPER 40‑Hour, current. /li liFamiliarity with power tools and machinery. /li liEquipment operating experience. /li liPrevious management or supervisory experience. /li /ul h3EDUCATION: /h3 pCollege degree (2 additional years of experience will substitute). /p h3CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSING REQUIREMENTS: /h3 pValid Driver's License and passport valid for six months after end of contract. /p h3OTHER: /h3 pUS citizenship or permanent residency required. /p pA prerequisite of employment for this position is to successfully gain a favorable Elevated Background Investigation (EBI) result prior to deployment.
