Amazon Leo is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low‑latency, high‑speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world. As a Systems Engineer, this role is primarily responsible for the design, development, and integration of communication payload and customer terminal systems.
The Role
Be part of the team defining the overall communication system and architecture of Amazon Leo’s broadband wireless network. This unique opportunity allows you to innovate and define groundbreaking wireless technology at global scale. The team develops and designs the communication system for Leo and analyzes system‑level performance metrics such as overall throughput, latency, system availability, packet loss, and more.
Key responsibilities include:
* Leading the effort in designing and developing advanced technology and solutions for the communication system.
* Building advanced physical layer and protocol stack systems as proof‑of‑concept and reference implementations to improve the performance and reliability of the LEO network.
* Applying concepts from digital signal processing, information theory, and wireless communications to develop novel solutions for achieving ultra‑high performance.
* Developing simulation tools with emphasis on modeling physical‑layer aspects such as advanced receiver modeling, interference cancellation techniques, FEC abstraction models, etc.
* Integrating and verifying hardware and software sub‑systems as part of system integration, link bring‑up, and verification.
Export Control Requirement
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Basic Qualifications
* PhD or Master’s degree and 5+ years of quantitative field research experience.
* 3+ years of wireless communications systems and implementation experience.
Preferred Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering, or experience with current and upcoming RF standards in cellular (4G/5G), WiMAX, 802.11ad, microwave backhaul, DVB‑S2 / DVB‑C, or related broadband wireless standards.
* Knowledge of multiple access systems including OFDMA, TDMA, and CDMA.
* Experience in test‑setup automation using MATLAB, Python, or Perl.
* Ability to work in a small team and deliver results beyond expectations.
Benefits and Compensation
Base salary range: USD 136,000 – 184,000 annually (varies by location). Your Amazon package will include sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation is determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
