The Smart Eyewear LAB, a pioneering project in heart of Milan

The EssilorLuxottica Smart Eyewear LAB is the first joint research centre ever between EssilorLuxottica and Politecnico di Milano aimed at designing the smart-glasses of the future, a new genera tion of we arables which are capable of autonomous network connection. It is a pioneering project that will enable the development of new technologies and services using a widely used interface such as eyewear.

The EssilorLuxottica Smart Eyewear Lab in Milan will work as part of the EssilorLuxottica Group’s R&D platform, which is already operating globally. The EssilorLuxottica Smart Eyewear Lab will initially last five years and will employ over 100 enthusiastic and talented researchers and scientists working closely together in a dedicated space within the Innovation District in Milan.

In this context, we are looking for a highly motivated Data Scientist, working closely with the research team from Politecnico di Milano and EssilorLuxottica Werable R&D colleagues to develop innovative solutions and algorithms using artificial intelligence techniques applied to actual data.

In particular, the data scientist will be included in the eye-tracking and/or camera and sensors research stream of the Smart Eyewear Lab.

Your tasks and responsibilities

o State of the art analysis: Identify relevant previous studies on a specific topic, selecting the most relevant jobs and implementing the proposed solutions by comparing them.
o Perform dataset scouting and collection: Identify valuable data sources and manage their collection process by using database (SQL, NoSQL, Relational Database etc.).
o Data analysis and exploration: Analyze large amount of data (both time-series and images) to identify and to extract the main features and present summary results using data visualization techniques.
o AI algorithms building: scouting of the ideal AI algorithms for the application under development, model training (machine learning, deep learning, TinyML) and validation of the results.
o AI algorithm industrialization: Software engineering for performance optimization and model deployment on prototype embedded/cloud platforms.

Portrait of a perfect candidate

o Educational Background in Computer Science, Mathematics, Computer Engineering (Master Degree or better a PhD)
o At least 2/3 years of experience in data scientist position after PhD or at least 5 years after Master Degree.
o Experience in literature analysis and scouting of innovative approaches.
o Proficiency in data exploration and results presentation.
o Solid software development skills and experience in languages such as Python or C++.
o Solid experience on modeling techniques (time series, decision trees, random forests etc.).
o Background in time series elaboration, image processing, computer vision and signal processing.
o Background in machine/deep learning techniques and algorithms (optimization algorithm, data fusion, digital signal processing).
o Good knowledge of embedded system and firmware development.
o Good knowledge on partitioning and runtime managing of Artificial Intelligent applications
o Good knowledge of eye-tracking system using camera or other sensors (ex. photodiodes).
o Familiarity with machine and deep learning frameworks, such as PyTorch, Keras, TensorFlow, etc.
o Basic knowledge of electronic systems and sensors.
o Fluent English
o Italian is a plus
