The School of Mathematics and Statistics has over eighty academic staff and thirty research staff, including visiting academics. UNSW is ranked in the top 100 in the world for mathematics and statistics by CWTS Leiden, US News, and QS. The school covers applied and pure mathematics, and statistics.
The Research Associate will undertake collaborative and self-directed research on an ARC-funded Discovery Project titled “High Dimensional Approximation, Learning, and Uncertainty”. The project aims to develop reliable, accurate, fast schemes for high-dimensional approximation, capable of handling hundreds or more variables or uncertain parameters, tailored to specific applications.
THIS ROLE IS BASED IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.
About The Role
* Level A - $113K - $121K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
* Fixed Term – 2 years
* Full-time (35 hours per week)
The role reports to Professor Frances Kuo and Professor Ian Sloan, with no direct reports.
Specific Responsibilities For This Role Include
* Conduct research in High Dimensional Approximation, Uncertainty Quantification, Deep Learning, and Quasi-Monte Carlo Methods independently and as part of a team, including leading some areas where appropriate.
* Contribute to scientific papers, reports for international journals, and progress reports to researchers and industry partners.
* Assist with coordinating research activities and contribute to research outputs to meet milestones.
* Help prepare research proposals for funding and seek industry collaborations.
* Participate in or present at conferences and workshops.
* Supervise honours and HDR students.
* Align with the university’s Code of Conduct and Values.
* Follow health and safety policies, ensuring actions do not impact safety.
About The Successful Applicant
Selection criteria include:
* A PhD in Mathematics, preferably in computational mathematics or related areas.
* Ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
* Knowledge in Quasi-Monte Carlo methods, finite element analysis, or machine learning (highly desirable).
* Proficiency in Matlab, C++, or Python.
* Ability to work in a team and collaborate across disciplines.
* Commitment to UNSW’s values and health and safety policies.
