The Manager of Automation Engineering is responsible for leading and overseeing the implementation of automation technologies and strategies at the Villa Guardia manufacturing site within a GxP environment, to improve efficiency and to keep manufacturing at the best industry standards in cooperation with Global Engineering and Automation Engineering of Internal Manufacturing sites. This role drives Building & Process Automation improvement activities, supports new Process Control and Safety Systems deployments across Villa Guardia Site, and provides maintenance support for existing Manufacturing Process Control Systems. Responsibilities Design and implement Hardware and Software solutions in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and the Global Automation Policy. Cooperate with Global Engineering, Internal Manufacturing sites Automation Engineers and IS for the TechOps Automation Roadmap implementation, including defining automation systems interfaces with the IT infrastructure. Support Site Engineering in the specification and follow-up of pharmaceutical plants and equipment using established procedures, including equipment selection, schematic design, system layout, cost estimation and system documentation. Develop and implement control and automation design based upon cause-and-effect documentation, P&IDs, control narrative, and an understanding of the environment. Ensure accuracy and reliability of instrumentation, control and safety systems. Identify and pursue process quality, efficiency, and safety improvements by maintaining cGxP and H&S knowledge and assessing against the State of the Art technology. Write and update SOPs and other Process Control System documentation as part of the operational lifecycle. Cooperate with Site Engineering, QA and IS Compliance to ensure production continuity and timely completion of audits, CAPAs and validation testing. Ensure deployed systems are available for Manufacturing, maintained, and their qualified status is not compromised. Communicate system changes to Manufacturing in advance and account for production schedule. Respond quickly to reports of Manufacturing system faults, troubleshoot with Manufacturing and other Engineering disciplines. Assist in developing software and hardware configuration to remediate system faults, improve efficiency and safety, and respond to CAPA or error report actions. Carry out preventative and planned maintenance and identify maintenance requirements where needed. Carry out system modifications per Change Control procedure. Follow Environmental Policy, Quality System, and applicable laws and company procedures; ensure compliance with Jazz Pharmaceuticals Code of Conduct. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Advanced knowledge of Distributed Control and Safety Systems and/or PLC applications. Awareness of integrated process control SIMATIC Batch (batch processing). Knowledge of Batch process and GAMP/GEP. Database administration experience (SQL). Advanced PLC programming skills (e.g., STL, SCL). High-level programming (e.g., C, C++, VB). Structured system testing and documentation such as FAT/SAT/OQ protocols. Experience in maintenance programs and system version upgrades. Ability to install, configure and update Process Control System software; Siemens PCS7 experience preferred. Experience maintaining and upgrading PLC or DCS control systems; experience designing, maintaining and upgrading network infrastructures. Ability to form long-term relationships with key support groups, QA, engineering, CSV, and senior managers; transparent communication; proactive in sharing ideas; “can do” attitude; willingness to learn new technologies; fluent in English; strong oral, written and presentation skills. Experience with Process Control System software installation/configuration from major vendors other than Siemens (e.g., ABB, Emerson, Rockwell). Desirable Qualifications Experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry. Experience with Safety Instrumented Systems and commissioning activities. Operational Excellence / Lean manufacturing skills and/or certifications (e.g., Green or Black Belt). Required/Preferred Education and Licenses Master’s degree in engineering, Electrical, Automation or relevant technical field. 7-10 years’ experience in PLC-based unit operation including graphical interface and data collection.
