We are seeking for highly motivated and talented PhD candidates with a strong academic background to join our team and work on cutting-edge research at the intersection of next-generation networking, edge computing, and AI-driven autonomous systems.
Available PhD Topics
Topic 1: AI-Native Distributed Optimisation and Orchestration for Edge-enabled 6G Networks
Future 6G networks will rely on highly distributed edge-cloud infrastructures where computing, storage, and networking resources operate across multiple domains. The Edge Data Network (EDN) paradigm enables services and data processing to be deployed close to the network edge, supporting advanced applications and AI-driven control. This PhD project aims to design AI-native optimization and orchestration mechanisms for edge-enabled 6G networks, addressing challenges like i) intelligent traffic steering, ii) adaptive scaling of network functions and services, and iii) coordination among multiple AI-based control loops operating on shared infrastructure. The goal is to develop scalable and stable solutions validated through simulations and edge-cloud testbeds connected to operational 5G infrastructures.
Topic 2: Networking and edge computing for ground-air autonomous systems
Future autonomous systems will integrate aerial platforms such as drones with ground vehicles and robotic systems to support applications including monitoring, logistics, and emergency response. These systems require reliable communication and distributed computing capabilities in highly dynamic environments characterized by mobility and variable connectivity. This PhD project investigates networking architectures and edge computing solutions for cooperative ground–air autonomous systems, focusing on i) Drone-to-drone and drone-to-infrastructure communication, and ii) edge orchestration mechanisms for real-time task offloading and resource allocation. The research will develop models and experimental frameworks to evaluate performance in terms of latency, reliability, and scalability, enabling robust coordination among heterogeneous autonomous agents operating in complex scenarios. A testbed consisting of AGV and drones will be used for the evaluation.
