Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Freelance Commissioning Engineer to support the testing, commissioning, and handover of data centre projects in the Milan region. The role is focused on ensuring that all mission‑critical systems are installed, tested, and commissioned in line with project requirements, client standards, and Vertiv best‑practice methodologies.
The Commissioning Engineer will work closely with Project Managers, Site Managers, design teams, vendors, and client representatives to ensure systems achieve full operational readiness, performance, and reliability.
This role is primarily site‑based and suited to individuals with strong experience in fast‑track data centre or critical infrastructure environments.
Key Responsibilities
* Plan, coordinate, and execute commissioning activities for data centre facilities
* Lead and participate in testing, start‑up, and integrated systems testing (IST)
* Commission and validate mission‑critical systems, including:
* Electrical systems (LV/MV, UPS, switchgear, generators, PDUs)
* Mechanical systems (chillers, cooling systems, CRAC/CRAH units)
* Controls and monitoring systems (BMS, EPMS)
* Review and approve commissioning plans, procedures, and method statements
* Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors during FAT, SAT, and on‑site testing
* Record results, manage punch lists, and drive issue resolution to closure
* Ensure compliance with HSEQ standards, client specifications, and local regulations
* Support client witnessing, demonstrations, and final handover documentation
* Provide clear progress updates and technical reports to project leadership
Required Experience & Skills
* Proven experience as a Commissioning Engineer within data centre or mission‑critical environments
* Strong technical knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems used in data centres
* Experience with integrated systems testing (IST) and phased commissioning strategies
* Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and specifications
* Confident working in live or high‑availability environments
* Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail
* Ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders during high‑pressure project phases
Qualifications & Certifications
* Degree or technical qualification in Electrical, Mechanical, or Building Services Engineering
* Relevant commissioning or electrical/mechanical certifications (advantageous)
* Health & Safety training suitable for construction and data centre environments
* English required; Italian strongly preferred
Location & Working Arrangement
* Site‑based role in Milan with regular attendance required
* Occasional flexibility during commissioning windows / out‑of‑hours testing
Contract Details
* Freelance engagement for 12–15 months
* Competitive day or hourly rate, dependent on experience
