SummaryThis position is located at NAS Sigonella, Aquatics Section, Fitness Branch, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department. The primary purpose is to act as pool lifeguard and swimming instructor.DutiesIncumbent performs work within the swimming program, including instruction in various swimming skills, styles, and basic diving for various age groups. Ensures that swimmers observe all water safety rules. Performs rescue work and renders emergency first aid until a qualified doctor is present. Completes accident reports. Responsible for the safety of all swimmers, ensuring everyone is accounted for and checking identification to allow only authorized patrons. Performs necessary maintenance for sanitation and cleanliness of the pool and area. Ensures paperwork/course records are completed and turned into the Red Cross promptly after course completion. Teaches classes using appropriate equipment and is responsible for its proper storage.Requirements
Minimum age is 18 years old.Applicants must provide proof of current certification as a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or equivalent, Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR (attach copies).Must satisfactorily complete a background investigation and pass a pre-employment physical examination.Work schedule is subject to change and may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays and rotating shifts.Work is performed indoors and outdoors. May be exposed to sunburn and eye irritation due to chlorinated water.Position requires sustained sitting and constant vigilance to ensure maximum security of personnel in and around the swimming pool.Male candidates born after December 31, 1959, and at least 18 years of age, are required to certify that they have registered with the Selective Service System (attach proof of registration).Civilian candidates must possess a No-Fee government passport, Italian mission visa, Sponsor's Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders or Command-sponsorship authorization, and Sojourner's permit or application letter.Military personnel, if selected, must provide PCS orders and written authorization from their command to work during off-duty hours.Participation in Direct Deposit/Electronic Fund Transfer is required.All federal employees are required to remain drug free throughout employment.
QualificationsSix (6) months of general experience in any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the duties of this position and six (6) months of specialized experience, or successful completion of two (2) years of study above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation.Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of this position and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. Qualified candidates will be ranked by the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) to determine order of referral:
Knowledge of various swimming skills and styles.Ability to instruct others.Skill in providing assistance in emergency situations.Ability to exercise control over a group of people.
