Northern Illinois University College of Law invites applications for a full‑time Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor who will also serve as Director of the Business Law Innovation Clinic. The position will start on a 12‑month appointment, fully funded by NIU. The starting rank will be Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor based on qualifications.
Overview
NIU Law is a top public law school recognized for diversity, value, and careers in public interest. The Business Law Innovation Clinic provides legal assistance to not‑for‑profit organizations, entrepreneurs, and small business owners in under‑represented communities in DeKalb and Naperville. The clinic advises on business formation and represents clients with transactional business law issues.
Responsibilities

* Direct and supervise the daily operation of the Business Law Innovation Clinic.
* Supervise and teach law students in a clinical setting.
* Teach clinic seminar classes each semester and a summer school session.
* Supervise the legal work of clinic students, both full‑time DeKalb students and part‑time JD students at Naperville (in‑person or online).
* Advise and represent clients on entity formation, incorporation, business enterprise certification, and related business law matters.
* Advise and represent clients on formation of non‑profit organizations, federal tax‑exempt status, and related matters.
* Engage in outreach, educational workshops, and presentations to strengthen community connections.
* Maintain records of community engagement activities.
* Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Programs and other NIU College of Law clinical faculty.
* Develop and maintain community partnerships, seek new funding sources, write grant applications, and promote the clinic.
* Provide service to the College of Law and the university through committee participation and professional activities.
Minimum Qualifications

* J.D. degree from an ABA‑accredited law school.
* At least three years of significant experience in business law, particularly in areas served by the clinic.
* Admission to the practice of law and in good standing in at least one state or the District of Columbia.
* Ability to be admitted to the practice of law in Illinois within two years after commencement of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
At least five years of significant experience in transactional business law, formation and representation of not‑for‑profit organizations, and/or experience teaching and supervising students in a law school clinic.

Appointment and Compensation
The appointment is a 12‑month full‑time position with a standard 37.5 hours per week. Compensation is commensurate with experience, starting at $95,000 per year. NIU offers a robust benefits package.
Outside Employment
Outside consulting or employment must receive prior approval from the Director of Clinical Programs and the Dean. Compliance with Illinois’ University Faculty Research and Consulting Act and NIU regulations is required.
