Overview
The School of Music at Northern Illinois University ( NIU ) invites applications for a one-year position in Orchestra, at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, beginning in Fall 2025.
NIU, located 65 miles west from Chicago, is a comprehensive teaching and research-based institution with close to 17,000 currently enrolled students. The main campus is located in DeKalb, 65 miles west of Chicago’s “Loop” and 40 miles southeast of Rockford. In addition to the main campus, NIU has three education centers in Rockford, and Naperville. DeKalb/Sycamore, with a population of about 50,000, is a modern paradox, a rural/urban community. It is simultaneously recognized for its manufacturing and rich farmlands. The site of the first manufacture of barbed wire and the development of hybrid seed corn are evidence of its diversified history. This year Meta (Facebook) announced further expansion with an injection of over $1 billion into three new data centers at its cloud campus in DeKalb. The blend of industry and agriculture, coupled with the cultural and recreational facilities of the university and supplemented by easy access to Chicago and Rockford, provide an enjoyable environment in which to live.
The School of Music is a vibrant facet of the NIU campus that prides itself on strong support of first-generation undergraduate students, providing readily available resources for faculty-directed study and research opportunities. The distinguished faculty are Fulbright Scholars, Grammy Award Winners, Chamber Music America and MacArthur Foundation Grants recipients, residents at Jazz at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, guest conductors at Avery Fisher Hall, and commercial recording artists who perform regularly at significant international and national venues. The NIU Graduate Jazz Studies Program was recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the ten best in the nation. Position Summary
This Visiting Assistant Professor position will teach Undergraduate and Graduate clarinet and chamber music, serve as area Coordinator for Woodwinds, and supervise Graduate Assistants.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Teach Undergraduate and Graduate clarinet and chamber music.
* Serve as area Coordinator for Woodwinds and supervise Graduate Assistants
* Engage in recruitment, creative/scholarly activity, and service contributions appropriate for a visiting faculty member.
Minimum Required Qualifications
* Master’s degree in music with professional experience
* Outstanding studio teaching and clarinet performance skills
* Documented record of creative collaboration with diverse colleagues and students
Additional Requirements
* Applicants should be able to demonstrate and document a commitment to student success, particularly for first-generation and traditionally under-represented groups.
Preferred Qualifications
* Terminal degree or equivalent professional achievement
* Experience teaching clarinet and other relevant curriculum at the collegiate level
* Evidence of successfully recruiting music majors to the collegiate level
