Fixed‐term AppointmentThis is a fixed‐term appointment with an initial duration of 4 years, extendable up to a maximum of 8 years contingent on performance and organisational needs.DescriptionSpace Rider System Engineer in the Space Rider Space Segment of the Space Rider Programme, Flight Programmes Department, Directorate of Space Transportation.Responsible for follow‐up and coordination of system engineering activities across the project lifecycle, supporting space segment system‐level analyses, interface harmonisation and verification, and consolidation of system performance, orbital and re‐entry module aspects, as well as related ground and post‐flight activities.DutiesFollow‐up of Space Rider system activities, identify project criticalities, define optimisations for mission success.Provide technical support for harmonisation and verification of interfaces between space segment and payload aggregate, ground segment, launch system and landing site.Define, develop and qualify the multi‐purpose cargo bay, consolidating the payload aggregate throughout the design and qualification loop.Develop and qualify avionics equipment, solar arrays, and contribute to system budgets, guidance, navigation and control (GNC) analyses and architecture trade‐offs.Verify attitude and orbital control systems, integrating GNC sensors and actuators within hardware‐in‐the‐loop and avionics test bench environments.Follow‐up electrical power subsystem development, covering requirements flow‐down, qualification testing, procurement milestones and related assessments.Assess AVUM Orbital Module/Re‐entry Module end‐to‐end system engineering aspects, including mission and visibility analyses, trajectories, aerodynamics, thermal, structural aspects and flying qualities.Consolidate AVUM Orbital Module/Re‐entry Module end‐to‐end system synthesis, performance, budgets, margins and coherence of internal and external interfaces.Develop, integrate and qualify ground support equipment, including mobile hangar for post‐flight activities at the re‐entry module landing site, defining interfaces and operational considerations.Support mechanical domains for avionics equipment and damping systems during development and qualification milestones.Develop, design and qualify mechanical and mechanism subsystems, assessing related thermal aspects.Assist line management with regular reporting to upper management.QualificationsExperience in system engineering for complex space missions, end‐to‐end space systems.Experience in design, development, qualification, verification and testing of space segment systems and equipment for launcher systems, orbital platforms and/or re‐entry systems.Experience in system‐level analyses, including performance, budgets, margins and interface definition and verification.Experience coordinating and carrying out major ESA reviews related to development and qualification of space systems.Knowledge of avionics, attitude and orbital control systems, GNC, electrical power subsystems and verification environments such as hardware‐in‐the‐loop and test benches.Familiarity with ground support equipment development and operations, including interface aspects with space systems and post‐flight activities.Core CompetenciesResult OrientationOperational EfficiencyFostering CooperationRelationship ManagementContinuous ImprovementForward ThinkingAdditional RequirementsTechnical knowledge of space transportation systems, including re‐entry vehicles.Technical knowledge of system engineering principles, structures and avionics.Demonstrated experience in project development activities, including preparation and execution of ESA reviews.Familiarity with ECSS standards and their application to development, verification and qualification of space systems at system and subsystem level.Familiarity with materials and processes for space transportation systems, including reusability, refurbishment and operability of re‐entry vehicles.Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams and interface with diverse technical stakeholders.Essential Personal AttributesExcellent cognitive, analytical, planning and organisational skills.Ability to anticipate problems, solve complex issues and relate situations to context.Ability to make solution‐oriented, pragmatic and timely decisions of high standard and integrity.Diversity, Equity and InclusivenessESA is an equal opportunity employer, committed to achieving diversity within the workforce and creating an inclusive working environment.
