Mellon Humanities Professor /b /ppWe are seeking a scholar with an outstanding record of research and imagination to contribute to the intellectual profile of the Academy and its leadership team. The Mellon Professor is the public face of the humanities at the Academy and assists Rome Prize Fellows across various humanities fields, including Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance / Early Modern, Modern Italian, Conservation, and Historic Preservation. The role involves scholarly guidance, facilitating contacts in Rome and Italy, and collaborating with the Director, Heiskell Arts Director, and President on programming and publications. The Mellon Professor plays a key role in advancing the Academy’s mission and maintaining high-quality programs. /ppbOrganization /b /ppSince 1894, the American Academy of Rome has served as a residential research and creative center. Its purpose is to enable motivated scholars and artists to immerse themselves in Rome’s ancient and modern experiences, fostering daily exchange within a vibrant community. The Academy boasts a notable history of Fellows, including Guggenheim, Pulitzer, MacArthur, Grammy, Pritzker, Poet Laureate, and Nobel laureates. /ppApproximately 35 Fellows are selected annually for the Rome Prize by rotating juries across disciplines. The community also includes invited Residents and visiting artists and scholars. /ppThe Academy is led by a President based in New York, with programs in Rome directed by the Director, alongside the Heiskell Arts Director and Mellon Professor in the Humanities. /ppbSupervision /b /ppThe Mellon Professor reports to the Director and collaborates with the Director, Heiskell Arts Director, Deputy Director for Fellowships and Programs, and the President. /ppbResponsibilities /b /ppbA. Rome Prize Fellows /b /pulliFacilitate contacts and dialogue between Fellows and Italian counterparts in academic, cultural, and institutional sectors in Rome and beyond; /liliDesign, organize, and lead site visits and trips in Rome, Italy, and the Mediterranean, in coordination with the Director and other staff; /liliAdminister the Fellows Project Fund, including informing Fellows about it, reviewing proposals, and awarding funding; /liliBuild relationships with Roman scholarly and creative communities, including Italian universities and international institutions; /liliCollaborate with the Heiskell Arts Director to support Fellows; /liliPerform additional tasks related to Fellow support as directed. /li /ulpbB. Programs and Publications /b /pulliDevelop and execute a calendar of programs and events in the humanities and arts; /liliSupport program coordination, communication, and outreach efforts; /liliCollaborate with the Heiskell Arts Director and Programs staff; /liliPerform other program-related responsibilities as assigned. /li /ulpbC.
