The incumbent leads work related to restoration monitoring and the monitoring and reporting platform for the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, GBF Target 2 and the Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM).Organizational SettingThe Forestry Division (NFO) leads FAO's work in promoting sustainable forest management and the environmental, social and economic dimensions of forestry.
The Forest Monitoring and Data Platforms (FMDP) Team supports members on forest monitoring to inform policy, planning and reporting, including NFMS, ETF, MRV, and restoration monitoring, and develops and maintains Open Foris and SEPAL platforms.
The position is located in the FMDP Team at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.Reporting LinesThe Forestry Officer (Restoration Monitoring) reports to the Senior Forestry Officer/Team Leader, FMDP under the Director, NFO.Technical FocusLead NFO work related to restoration monitoring and ensure technical linkage with FAO units and partner organizations, aligning with the FAO Strategic Framework and FAO Policy on Gender Equality.Key ResultsComprehensive technical and policy expertise to support planning, development and implementation of divisional programmes, projects, products and services in line with divisional objectives and the FAO Strategic Framework.Key FunctionsPlan and lead components of multidisciplinary teams; participate in cross-divisional committees and project teams; provide specialized expertise on international policy and standard setting.Develop technical, analytical, monitoring and reporting frameworks, tools and databases to support programmes and projects.Design and conduct research, data collection, validation, analysis and reporting to support technical standards, instruments, innovative approaches and policy proposals; provide policy and technical advice.Respond to country requests for technical and policy assistance; provide backstopping to field projects.Collaborate to ensure quality and effectiveness of capacity development and knowledge sharing within Member Nations, including learning materials and online tools.Promote international cooperation and contribute technical expertise at international/intergovernmental meetings.Participate in resource mobilization activities in line with the FAO Strategic Framework.Specific FunctionsCoordinate development and application of the Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM) for UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and GBF Target 2.Coordinate the implementation of Accelerating Innovative Monitoring for Nature Restoration (AIM4NatuRe).Coordinate monitoring support to Flagship initiatives of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.Coordinate the Task Force on Monitoring in support of the UN Decade andGBF Roadmap.Contribute to cross-sectoral and inter-divisional cooperation on monitoring of ecosystems.Ensure regular monitoring and reporting of progress of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.Provide capacity development support for restoration monitoring.Support development of restoration monitoring modules in SEPAL and other projects.Perform other duties as required.Qualifications and CompetenciesAdvanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in forestry, natural resource management or related field.Seven years of relevant experience in forest and land management or monitoring or related field.Working knowledge of English (proficiency level C) and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).Technical/functional skills: depth of knowledge in forest monitoring and restoration monitoring; ability to develop innovative technical solutions; experience in country support and capacity development; ability to mobilize resources.General InformationFAO reserves the right not to make an appointment.Appointment may be subject to medical fitness, residency/visa requirements and security clearances.Conditions of ServiceA competitive remuneration and benefits package is offered.
