European Patent Attorney (Mid-Level, In-House IP Team)
Location: Italy or Germany (Remote)
The Position
Meril Life Sciences is seeking a mid-level European Patent Attorney (5–7 years’ experience) to join its in-house Intellectual Property team. The role offers substantial responsibility across the full patent lifecycle, with a particular focus on portfolio management, prior art searches and analysis, EPO prosecution and oppositions, litigation support (both national level in Europe and UPC).
The position may be based in Italy, Germany, or fully remote, while remaining fully integrated into an international in-house IP organization.
Key Responsibilities
* Draft high-quality European and international patent applications, primarily in the mechanical and medical device fields
* Manage and conduct patent prosecution before the EPO, including examination strategy and portfolio alignment
* Actively handle and support EPO opposition and appeal proceedings, including coordination with external counsel and preparation of technical and legal submissions
* Coordinate, instruct, and supervise external patent attorneys and law firms across multiple jurisdictions
* Conduct and oversee Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) searches and analyses, including risk assessment and clear reporting to internal stakeholders
* Contribute to strategic patent portfolio management, including filing strategies, portfolio optimization, and lifecycle management
* Support IP litigation activities, including national and UPC litigation and enforcement actions, in close cooperation with external counsel
* Work closely with R&D, engineering, regulatory, and business teams to identify inventions and develop robust, defensible IP strategies
* Provide clear, pragmatic, and business-focused IP advice to internal stakeholders
Required Qualifications and Experience
* Fully qualified European Patent Attorney (EQE qualification is mandatory)
* 5–7 years of professional experience in patent drafting, prosecution, and portfolio management either in house or in the private practice
* Educational background in Mechanical Engineering. Experience with medical devices and adjacent technical fields is advantageous
* Demonstrated EPO experience, including hands-on involvement in examination, opposition, and appeal proceedings
* Proven exposure to contentious IP matters, including EPO oppositions and/or national/UPC litigation in Europe
* Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with a structured and solution-oriented approach
Language Requirements
* Fluent English (professional proficiency required)
* German language skills are an advantage
