Arup is expanding its skills and capability in the energy transition and renewable energy projects. Our growth, in terms of income and skills/resources, is driven by the increasing demand for sustainable energy solutions to decarbonise economies. Power Systems, including renewables generation and storage as well as transmission and distribution (T&D) electrical infrastructure, is considered a key enabler for decarbonised energy transmission, storage, and interconnection.
The Opportunity
This is your chance to drive innovation within Arup Italia and contribute to projects across the Energy, sector. We are looking for a motivated senior power systems electrical engineer to help up bring together our existing power systems design and technical advisory service offering in a single team in our Milan office, who will work in close cooperation with the other energy teams in our Europe South geography.
The ambition for this role is to balance the acquisition of work from current and new clients and the growth of our project delivery capabilities in Italy. The team will be tasked with the acquisition and delivery of integrated energy projects for grid operators, data centres, utilities, renewables and energy storage developers and operators, with a vision to grow these services over time.
Given the ambitious targets Arup has set itself in terms of impact on energy systems, this is the opportunity to lead the development and growth of our Energy service offering in Italy.
As Energy Team Leader At Arup, You Will
- Develop business around, and contribute to winning work related to integrated energy systems in Italy, acting as main point of contact for the delivery of Arup’s energy design and technical advisory services in Italy.
- Liaise with clients to understand their needs, and propose creative and technically sound solutions, acting as bid manager for identified opportunities;
- Provide technical leadership and project management skills in the delivery of projects ranging from grid studies, interconnection design, and the integration of energy generation, transmission, distribution, storage and consumption, acting as project manager and overseeing project delivery by colleagues in Italy, energy teams in Europe and the UK as well as local subconsultants.
- Contribute to HV power projects within the Data Centre business;
- Grow HV as well as renewables generation and storage design skills within Arup Italia through recruitment and upskilling of colleagues;
- Act as ambassador for Arup in the energy transition, attending industry events to build relationships and maintain market-leading knowledge in emerging decarbonisation solutions.

We Are Looking For Someone Proactive And Dynamic Who Is Willing To Take Responsibility For Growing Our Energy Business Within Arup Italia. Ideally, You’ll Bring
- A degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or related discipline.
- +10 years of relevant experience working on high voltage (HV) electrical systems, substations, renewables and BESS design, energy systems integration and energy infrastructure projects in Italy.
- Sufficient technical expertise in HV, renewables and storage design to understand client’s needs, and oversee and take responsibility for project delivery by internal or external specialists.
- Experience and willingness to develop the Energy business in Italy, creating new clients and winning projects.
- Proven experience in project management and technical leadership on grid connection projects.
- Strong knowledge of the Italian HV transmission and distribution systems, including renewable generation and interconnections.
- Fluent in Italian and English
- Excellent communication and client engagement skills.
- Willingness to travel and work on-site in Italy and across Europe when needed.
Bonus Points If You Have
- Experience/understanding of power system analysis and delivery of power systems studies in software packages, such as DIgSILENT, PowerFactory, PSS/E, IPSA, ETAP, PSCAD, EMTP-ATP, ERACS and SKM
- Working knowledge of power system protection settings and co-ordination
- Cable thermal rating calculations
- Transformer design and rating calculations
- System losses calculations
- Cost/benefit analysis
- Knowledge of energy transition and decarbonisation strategies
- Previous experience in the data centre sector or critical infrastructure projects
- Proven track record in business development and market growth
- Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary and international teams
- Familiarity with relevant Italian HV electrical standards and regulations
- Experience with growing technical teams through recruitment and upskilling of colleagues
- Participation in industry events, conferences, or technical panels.
