Position Overview
The Manager, Chief Engineer is responsible for the continuous 24/7/365 operation of a large TierIII data center campus, overseeing all equipment and spaces up to the PDU at the customer level. The role manages scheduled and corrective maintenance, system repairs, testing, equipment commissioning, and all critical facility startup and ongoing operations. The Manager leads a team of senior Electrical and Mechanical specialists, facility technicians, and contracted maintenance teams, reporting to the Director of Operations and coordinating with the Director of Engineering.
Essential Job Functions
- Oversee and supervise efficient 24/7/365 operation of all facility equipment and systems, striving for zero downtime.
- Provide engineering analysis, recommendations and energy‑efficiency guidance to customers.
- Lead and develop assigned personnel, including performance appraisals, training plans, counseling and mentoring.
- Coordinate and supervise maintenance and service repairs for all critical systems: electrical distribution (12kV and lower), emergency diesel generators, UPS/Battery backups, HVAC (Chillers, CRACs, Cooling Towers, Package Units), BMS infrastructure, fire prevention, and other electromechanical and control equipment.
- Ensure maintenance activities comply with approved MOPs and Vantage’s mission‑critical work rules.
- Administer and refine preventive maintenance plans using the CMMS program.
- Monitor subcontracted maintenance projects, evaluating performance and recommending in‑house solutions when feasible.
- Develop manpower schedules and work methods that achieve low cost and efficient operation.
- Establish performance standards and quality levels for all work phases.
- Develop, implement and train staff on SOPs/EOPs/MOPs for equipment and systems, and create technical documentation for new or unsupported equipment.
- Run the site industrial safety program and manage Lock‑out/Tag‑out procedures in compliance with OSHA regulations.
- Prepare operating and repair budgets and coordinate purchases of parts, equipment and services within budget.
- Maintain spare parts inventory for expeditious repairs.
- Develop and maintain periodic operational testing schedules for critical systems.
- Provide oversight of system testing and quality‑assurance documentation after major repairs or maintenance to meet EPA/environmental and local/state regulations.
- Enhance the site reliability program, identifying potential future problems.
- Develop and maintain training programs for technicians and other staff on facility equipment and systems.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Job Requirements
- Minimum ten years of “hands‑on” maintenance, repair, installation or commissioning experience in mission‑critical facilities (mechanical and/or electrical).
- At least two years of leadership or management experience, demonstrated through project management, meeting deadlines, directing a maintenance department, and developing staff in mission‑critical environments.
- Comprehensive understanding of 2N data center/critical facility infrastructure, systems, operations, maintenance and emergency responses.
- Strong technical writing skills, including creation, coordination and updating of MOPs, EOPs and SOPs for critical facility equipment.
- Excellent customer‑service skills and the ability to explain infrastructure, engineering concepts and emergency procedures to site occupants.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to maintain constant interaction with supervisors, managers and technicians.
- Experience developing budgets, future plans, capital investments and repair projects with management and coordinating financial requests up to the CEO level.
- Willingness to work long hours, weekends, rotating shifts and be on call outside regular plant hours (24/7).
- Must successfully complete a background check and drug screen.
- Travel expected to be minimal, up to 5% for training.
