Ph3Overview /h3p12768 - Satellite and Atmospheric Data assimilation Scientist — Bologna, CMCC Foundation. Deadline: October 31st, 2025. Responsible for supporting the scientific plan. /ppCMCC Foundation is a cross-cutting scientific research center on climate change and its interactions with the environment, society, the world of business, and policymakers. CMCC pursues fundamental and applied science with utmost scientific integrity, prioritizing data-driven science and providing data, information, and research results that can support informed public debate and decision-making processes. CMCC is an equal-opportunity employer and values diversity. /ph3Role /h3pThe Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) seeks a motivated scientist to join the development of the Scalable PaRallelised EArth Data Assimilation System (SPREADS), an ensemble Kalman filter built on the open-source DART framework. SPREADS assimilates millions of observations, including satellite radiances, and is evolving into a weakly coupled system for atmosphere, land, and ocean components. The position will initially focus on the assimilation of hyperspectral infrared radiances from new instruments such as IASI-NG, MTG-IRS, and CrIS, using RTTOV. Novel algorithmic approaches and the application of machine learning methods are encouraged. The goal is to improve the representation of the atmospheric state and enhance forecast skill from the sub-seasonal to seasonal timescales. /ph3Responsibilities /h3ulliAssimilate radiance measurements from new hyperspectral infrared instruments ( IASING, MTG-IRS, CrIS) using the RTTOV forward operator; /liliDevelop and test novel algorithms to enhance radiance assimilation; /liliApply machine learning methods to improve the representation of atmospheric states; /liliExtend assimilation to additional satellite instruments beyond infrared, including microwave radiances, GNSS radio occultation, and imager data. /li /ulh3Requirements /h3ulliPhD and University degree in Physics, Maths, Meteorology or related fields /liliAt least 10 years of relevant work experience /liliGood knowledge of satellite observations and data assimilation /liliStrong computing skills, including Unix/Linux, Fortran and possibly C++, Python, and IDL /li /ulh3Duration, Compensation Benefits /h3ulliThis opportunity will be issued both internally and externally /liliManagers will be based in the Bologna CMCC office /liliContract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and experience /liliAppointment period: initially 24 months starting January 2026 /liliWelfare package for a minimum 12 months contract /liliFlexible working time per internal policies; support during the immigration process, if needed /li /ulh3Protected Category /h3pBelonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) is a preferential condition.
