Overview
Join to apply for the Mechanical Design Engineer role at Thales Alenia Space.
A Joint Venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), Thales Alenia Space is a global space manufacturer delivering high-tech solutions for telecommunications, navigation, Earth Observation, environmental management, exploration, science and orbital infrastructures. Our customers include governments, institutions, space agencies and telecommunications operators, and we aim to Space to Connect, Secure & Defend, Observe & Protect, Explore, Travel & Navigate.
We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer. The candidate will define project solutions concerning the structure subsystems for space missions vehicles, based on metallic and composite materials. They will analyze requirements at structure subsystem level which will form the basis for the design definition. They will define design solutions for structural parts and interfaces, selecting appropriate materials, processes and mechanical parts. Mass-efficient structural solutions must align with selected aerospace materials to withstand launch, mission, re-entry and impact loads. FEM analyses capability is required to support design solutions and some detailed local models to assess critical areas. The engineer will support the structural development process based on dedicated test articles and breadboards to validate designs and analyses, and must have CAD and drawings knowledge to drive elaboration of proposed solutions. They should also coach and support the skill development of younger resources.
Key duties
* Design of spacecraft structures for manned and unmanned modules and satellites, including:
o Definition and sizing of structural parts and interfaces by hand calculation or preliminary FEM analysis
o Selection of materials and associated surface treatments
o Definition of required tolerances
o Review of CAD models and drawings
* Finite Element Modelling with FEMAP, Patran or Hypermesh (pre- and post-)
* Structural static & normal mode analyses based on FEM (e.g. Nastran)
* Support the development plan of the spacecraft from mechanical aspects
* Reporting (Design and Analysis report, support to design and development plans, support to instrumentation plan for mechanical testing)
The following tasks could be requested occasionally:
* Detailed verification through structural analysis: static, dynamic, fatigue and fracture mechanics, using hand calculation methodologies or FEM
* Support to static and dynamic testing preparation, attendance and results evaluation
Skills, experience and qualifications
* Must have: Mechanical Engineering Knowledge
* Knowledge of metallic and non-metallic technologies for materials or processes
* Knowledge of aerospace design and analysis methodologies and manuals (e.g., Bruhn, Roark)
* Applicable to mechanical product design development and verification
* Knowledge of CAD tools (e.g., CATIA) and manufacturing processes and capabilities
* Manufacturing drawing readings and knowledge
* Full comprehensive capability of Windows Office
* Knowledge of Nastran solver
* Knowledge of a FEM pre/post processor (Hyperworks, Femap, Patran)
Additional assets include competencies in using Matlab, Mathcad, Simulink or equivalent; Master Degree in Aerospace, Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering; advanced courses in Mechanical Design; prior experience in Structural or Mechanical Engineering or Industrial settings; English proficiency; French knowledge is an asset.
